The first official image of the stars of Boston Blue as their characters has been released. A spin-off from Blue Bloods, which ended after 14 seasons on December 13, 2024, Boston Blue will focus on Donnie Wahlberg’s character from the original show, Danny Reagan. Boston Blue will premiere on CBS on October 17, 2025.
In August 2025, TV Insider published the first photo of Wahlberg and Martin-Green as their Boston Blue characters. Easily the most fascinating part of the photo is that Wahlberg’s character is sporting a leather jacket and t-shirt instead of a suit. The fact that Wahlberg is dressed down becomes even more interesting since Martin-Green is shown wearing a grey suit.
What This Means For Boston Blue
There are two main takeaways from Boston Blue’s first promotional images. The first is arguably the most exciting for Blue Bloods fans who’ve been waiting for the spin-off to premiere. As the premiere date is less than two months away, CBS will continue to promote Boston Blue.
Secondly, the first official photo of Boston Blue seems to hint at an important difference between Boston Blue and Blue Bloods. After seeing Wahlberg’s character primarily wear suits while on duty for so many years, the fact that he is dressed down in the photo seems like it could be very significant.
When a TV character significantly changes their style, that is almost certainly a huge deal. A long line of people will likely have weighed in on the change, including the actor, stylists, producers, and even the network heads. Wahlberg dressing so differently in the first Boston Blue photo seems to indicate that the show’s version of Danny Reagan will be different.
Our Take On The First Official Boston Blue Photo
Throughout television history, there have been endless spin-offs that very clearly tried to be more of the same. Since Boston Blue is a police procedural like Blue Bloods was, the two shows will certainly have a lot in common. With that said, I’m very happy that the first Boston Blue photo indicates that the spin-off seems like it will mix things up.
Based on how relaxed and informal Wahlberg looks in the photo, it should be please to viewers that the character’s new surroundings don’t seem to be the only thing that is changing. Of course, it would be foolish not to be excited about the second half of the promotional photos.
After Martin-Green has been excellent in shows like The Walking Dead and Star Trek: Discovery, seeing the first tease of her new character is exciting. The fact that Martin-Green looks like she will be imbuing her Boston Blue character with effortless cool serves as the frosting on the cake.
