Erin’s Reunion With Danny In Boston Blue Fails To Honor Blue Bloods’ Success

While it’s exciting that Boston Blue is hosting a Blue Bloods reunion in its premiere, the reason why it’s happening is a bit disappointing, as it counters what made the original show so successful. The CBS police procedural series ran for 14 seasons and 293 episodes before ending in December 2024. As anyone could deduce, Blue Bloods was a massive triumph.

CBS isn’t ready to let go of the Blue Bloods universe just yet. The network ordered a spinoff, Boston Blue, which follows Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan and his move from New York to Boston. Wahlberg is the only original Blue Bloods cast member who is a series regular in the offshoot, but his former co-stars will make cameos, starting with Bridget Moynahan.

Bridget Moynahan’s Character Arrives In Boston On Business

Erin Reagan, played by Moynahan, is scheduled to make a special guest appearance in the Boston Blue pilot episode. Her coming to Boston to kick off the spinoff is exciting on the surface. However, it’s less thrilling when learning why Erin is traveling to her brother’s new city. Per TV Insider, the synopsis for the Boston Blue series premiere is:

“NYPD detective Danny Reagan teams up with Boston detective Lena Silver to investigate a deadly fire at a tech company. As they dig deeper, they uncover a complex web of secrets involving facial recognition technology, family ties, and a search for justice that brings the Silver and Reagan families closer together.”

The pilot episode’s description doesn’t explicitly explain why Boston Blue is bringing Erin back, but it alludes to the motivation behind her appearance. She is coming to Boston for work. Erin isn’t making the trip just to see her older brother. Instead, she, as an Assistant District Attorney, is seemingly working on a case that Danny is also assigned to.

Blue Bloods’ Primary Draw Was Its Family Aspect

The reason Blue Bloods was so successful was its family values. Yes, police procedurals are inherently intriguing to many. So, its genre might have pulled people in to begin with, but what made them stay was the Reagan family. By making Erin go to Boston for work instead of to visit her brother, Boston Blue is disregarding the original show’s main draw.

It would have been much more powerful and alluring if Erin’s visit in the Boston Blue premiere was all about checking in on Danny and not a case. Perhaps she could have gotten sucked into working on it while there. However, the pilot should begin with Erin in Boston for Danny and for Danny only.

The good news is that Boston Blue will have plenty of chances to focus on family. Hopefully, fans will see more Reagan family cameos as the season goes on, including Tom Selleck as Frank. If they are to come to Boston Blue, though, they should do so for Danny, not for work.
