Donnie Wahlberg’s Boston Blue Revealed In Blue Bloods Spinoff Trailer

The first trailer for Boston Blue reveals Donnie Wahlberg’s full return as Danny Reagan in the Blue Bloods spinoff. Running for 14 seasons and 293 episodes, Blue Bloods was an extremely popular CBS cop procedural centered on the Reagan family, a dynasty of sorts that has a long history with the New York City Police Department.

The series ended in 2024 despite remaining extremely popular, which prompted CBS to produce the spinoff. In Boston Blue, Danny will take a position in the Boston Police Department, giving the series an opportunity to expand beyond the parameters of the original series.

Now, CBS has released the first full trailer for Boston Blue. In it, Danny Reagn can be seen in Boston, getting acquainted with a new city and a fellow detective, played by Sonequa Martin-Green. After an extended interaction at the beginning of the trailer that highlights the differences between the NYPD and the Boston Police Department, the clip goes on to explore the spinoff’s new setting. Check it out below:

What This Means For Boston Blue

Set to premiere in mid-October, Boston Blue will take the franchise to a new location, while remaining grounded in the textures of the original series. Danny will be paired up Martin-Green’s Detective Lena Silver, who is the eldest daughter in an important law enforcement family in Boston.

This certainly echoes the make-up of the original series and its focus on the Reagan family dynasty, but with a new perspective. The trailer immediately highlights the ways in which the NYPD and BPD operate differently and that’s sure to bleed into the family dynamics that will be present.

Danny’s reputation has also seemingly followed him from New York, with Lena mentioning his tendency to go off the books when they begrudgingly team up to face Boston crime. In one of the trailer’s funnier moments, a man dressed up in Revolution-era costuming has found a body in Boston Harbor, so Boston Blue will certainly be milking its new location for everything it’s worth.

Our Take On The Boston Blue Trailer

Given the continued popularity of Blue Bloods and the outcry when it was canceled, it’s no surprise that the series is returning in some form. How that will shake out, though, remains to be seen. Boston Blue needs to bring something new to the table or otherwise risk being repetitive of the flagship series.

The trailer is too brief to give an idea of what that will really look like, but there are promising signs that the series will go in new directions and shed new light on Danny as a character while introducing interesting new players into the fold. Given Wahlberg’s enthusiasm for Boston Blue, though, it’s clear that a lot of love and care is going into the series, which could make all the difference.
