‘NCIS’ Boss Reveals Knight and Palmer’s Relationship Status Remains “Complicated” in Season 23

In NCIS Season 22, Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) and Jessica Knight (Katrina Law) finally decided to end their relationship for good as each person pursued different things. They even went far enough to start seeing other people, hinting that everything was over between them. However, some feelings lingered, and could be caught in some moments they shared. NCIS showrunner Steven D. Binder said in a recent interview that it’s not yet over for the duo, and things are about to take a turn, possibly for the worse. “It’s complicated,” he said, adding that “it’s going to get even more complicated.” Binder did not explain how the complications would come about, but it might have something to do with the characters’ individual journeys, which were the catalyst for the breakup.

Season 22 found Jessica working on the West Coast after she was accepted into the REACT Team. She had been there for six months before deciding to return to her old team. With Palmer, it wasn’t as easy as restarting their relationship, because Palmer had broken up with her and begun seeing someone else. This sequence of events appears to be repeating itself, as in Season 23, another team is once again courting Jessica. She gets picked for NCIS Elite, which was run by Sam Hanna (LL Cool J) of NCIS: Los Angeles. Binder cautioned that it would “blow up in her face in a really emotionally charged way.”

Meanwhile, Palmer continues helping the team solve more medical mysteries while being an awesome dad. But given that he doesn’t work as directly in the field as the rest of them, NCIS aims to give him some focus in a Palmer-centric episode. “We’re hoping to see a day in the life of Jimmy,” Binder said. “The world through the eyes of Jimmy — hopefully written by Brian Dietzen,” he added. Dietzen has been a co-writer on three previous episodes, including Ducky’s (David McAllum) tribute episode.

The full main cast returns for NCIS Season 23. Sean Murray is back as Timothy McGee in a cast that also includes Gary Cole as Alden Parker, Wilmer Valderrama as Nick Torres, Diona Reasonover as Kasie Hines, Rocky Carroll as Leon Vance, and, of course, Law and Dietzen.
