Host Lorraine Kelly questioned the 40-year-old Oscar winner about whether her teenage daughter Mia wanted to pursue an acting career.
Kate could be seen visibly bristling at the question about her private life and answered awkwardly, telling the presenter: “Since you’ve asked me and we’re on live TV. She does very much so.”
The Titanic star continued: “There’s a lot of positivity around it in our house and what I really enjoy is that she’s grown up not just watching me do it, but also learning how to respect it and that’s what’s nice for me.”
The mother-of-three went on to describe her children as not “seasoned on set kids” despite previously being married to American Beauty director Sam Mendes.
“They don’t sit and hang out and watch the monitor and have headphones on and treat the place like it’s their own playground, they really come as a treat to work, and so they really observe and ask lots of questions,” Kate explained.
“My son’s father is a director [Joe, son of Sam Mendes] so he gets to experience it a little bit with him too, it’s an extraordinary world to live in.
“It’s a wonderful job and I’ve been very fortunate and I wouldn’t discourage them from whatever they chose to do. They certainly seem to be showing signs of being very interested,” she added.
The British actress was on the programme to talk about her new films The Dressmaker and the biopic of late Apple co-founder by Danny Boyle entitled Steve Jobs.
She also spoke about turning 40 and wanted to be “feeling great” reaching the end of her thirties: “I’ve had a few really great years actually and I think subconsciously part of the reason why I have done quite a lot, is to do with the fact that it has worked for our life.”
“But also I did have that feeling that I wanted to go rocketing to forty and feeling great getting to the end of that chapter of the decade that your thirties really is, and starting a new chapter feeling energised and excited about what would come next.”
