Carver’s past is going to jeopardize his future in Chicago Fire season finale

It’s impressive how fast Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) has become a Chicago Fire staple. He’s only been around for two seasons, and yet, he’s managed to win over the viewers and the rest of the firehouse. He seemed like he’d be a knucklehead who had a brief stint, but now it’s looking like he’s going to be one of the show’s main characters moving forward.

Well, it was looking that way. Carver has some skeletons in his closet, as evidenced by his bleak childhood experiences with his siblings. He’s been able to keep these skeletons at bay for most of season 12, especially since he’s been wooing Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith), but things are going to take a turn for the worse in the season finale.

In a recent TV Line interview, Fire showrunner Andrea Newman shed light on the romance between Carver and Violet (Varver?) and confirmed that rough waters are up ahead. “Carver and Violet are like two heated magnets drawn to each other whether it’s a good idea or not,” she explained, when asked about their chemistry.

This tracks with what we’ve seen since the initial Varver hook up. Unfortunately, the next step in their potential relationship is going to be trickiest. Newman told the outlet that are going to be forced to confront some “serious issues” before the end of the season. She also teased a mysterious phone call that will put the romance in a brand new context:

“They have some serious issues to resolve, but there are lots of obstacles thrown their way — including a call in the finale that will lead to Carver’s past reaching out to drag him back to a dark time and place.”
This is not totally unexpected, since the official synopsis for the season 12 finale referenced Carver and some resurfaced trauma. That said, this sort of thing is par for the course in Chicago Fire history. It’s incredibly rare to come across a romance that doesn’t take multiple seasons to come to fruition. It’s part of the fun, frankly.

We hope Carver and Violet are able to overcome whatever the aforementioned phone call reveals, even if it takes them until next season to do it.
