The sophomore season of “The Golden Bachelor” is already heating up as 66 year old former NFL player-turned-sports lawyer Mel Owens has narrowed down the contestants to just 13 after the two-episode Sept. 24 premiere.
According to ABC, this week sees the remaining contestants on a hilarious group date for a “a no-holds-barred comedy roast” where the ladies will take turns roasting Owens on stage. The winner with the funniest joke will receive a coveted one-on-one date with him. Another lucky lady will earn a “culinary adventure” with the Bachelor lead, and two familiar faces from season one of “The Golden Bachelor” visit the women to play “spicy truth or dare” during a slumber party.

The Golden Roast of Mel Owens
Episode 3 of “The Golden Bachelor” kicks off with the women mingling in the mansion, but as some of them are getting along just fine, others are starting to grow jealous of those forming closer relationships with Mel Owens. In particular, a few of the ladies were not so happy to see Nicolle getting hot and heavy with Owens in the pool.
However, there are still plenty of chances for these women to get quality time with Owens. The first date card appears, and half of the women are heading to the historic Bellwether Theatre in Los Angeles for a comedic roast of Owens. Each woman must come up with a few jokes about Owens, and whoever makes him laugh the most receives a coveted one-on-one date with him.
With the help of comedian Jared Fried, several of the jokes took aim at Owens’ controversial ageist comments. “I’m Jared Freid, I’m very excited to be here. We’re gonna roast Mel! I’m 40, I’m the age Mel wishes you were,” he says.
Safe to say, the women had no problem speaking their minds on stage. There’s Monica B., who nailed her set with football digs at Owens and even threw some shade at Nicolle’s steamy makeout session with him.
Cheryl, who was a frontrunner in the premiere episode, also did a great job. “You remind me of a Detroit-style pizza — crusty, cheesy, and square,” she tells him.
Nicolle also joins in on the fun, impersonating Owens with a cheeky poem: “Roses are red, violets are blue, I want all the women to love me, especially you, and you, and you,” she quipped, pointing to all the younger women in the audience.
With the help of Freid, Owens selected Nicolle on a one-on-one date.
The two have a dinner date, and they both open up about their past marriages. Owens shares what went wrong in his marriage with his former wife of 25 years, sharing that she ultimately fell out of love with him. They seemed to connect, and they shared a kiss. Owens gives her a rose, securing her spot at the rose ceremony.
Debbie Earns a One-on-One with Owens, the Women Have a Slumber Party
Debbie gets herself a special one-on-one date with Owens, and it’s a private cooking class with French Chef Ludo Lefebvre.
“I love cooking with her,” Owens shares. The two enjoy their quality time together. “Cooking with Debbie made me feel comfortable,” he adds.
Meanwhile, the rest of the women are in the mansion, and are surprised when season one contestants Kathy and Susan make a special appearance, announcing that they will be having a slumber party. They dress up in silky pajamas that have Owens’ face on them and take part in games like “Never Have I Ever.” (We learn Gerri has taken part in the Mile High Club!)
As Owens and Debbie continue on their date, we learn that Debbie had a calling to join the show and meet him. They, too, share a kiss to end their date. Owens gives her a rose, and she gladly accepts.
As the women seek advice from Kathy and Susan, Cindy is struggling to be in the house with all the women. She admits to feeling neglected by Owens.
The Third Rose Ceremony
It’s time for another rose ceremony, and all the women are stepping up their game. Several of the women take Owens for a private conversation, like Carol, whose shyness nearly holds her back, but she lands her first kiss with him.
In fact, Owens ends up kissing many of the women that night. Cindy finally gets some alone time with Owens, and their conversations go smoothly, with Owens telling her that their connection is strong. “This feeling I didn’t expect,” Cindy tearfully shares with the cameras.
It’s time for the rose ceremony. Among the running are Nicolle and Debbie, who had already secured roses on their one-on-ones. The other women to receive roses are: Cindy, Peg, Roxanne, Gerri, Cheryl, Robin, and Carol.
That means four women have been sent home. They are: Terri, Monica P., Monica B., and Amy.
Only nine women remain, each still vying for Owens’ heart.
