How ‘Monk’ Captures Everything Fans Love About ‘Will Trent’ — and Then Some

Will Trent is a one-of-a-kind show, but if fans want more, they can check out a critically acclaimed 2000s series that has similar qualities. The police procedural debuted in 2023 and has been a hit ever since. Will Trent is heading into its fourth season on ABC, and while it hasn’t won any Emmys (although it should), it’s still loved by critics and fans alike.

Many have praised Will Trent for its writing, cast performances (especially Ramón Rodríguez’s), balance of humor and pathos, and more. As such, it’s no surprise that the show has run for at least four seasons. Given its track record, Will Trent season 4 certainly shouldn’t be its last. But if fans don’t want to wait, look no further than this eight-season mystery comedy-drama.

Monk Is The Perfect Replacement For Will Trent

The 2 Shows Share A Lot In Common

There are plenty of cop shows out there that will satisfy one’s itch for exciting, intriguing mysteries like the ones that Will Trent creates. They certainly aren’t hard to find. However, there is only one that perfectly balances comedy and drama and features a main character reminiscent of Will Trent, and that is Monk.

Monk is the perfect replacement for Will Trent. As mentioned, the two lead characters (Adrian in Monk and Will in Will Trent) have many things in common. Adrian, a private detective, is brilliant and possesses unique abilities that help him solve cases. His keen eye for detail might sound familiar, because that’s what makes Will one of the best GBI agents in Will Trent.

Additionally, Adrian and Will both suffer from trauma and disabilities. Monk‘s main character has OCD and many phobias, all of which intensified when his wife was murdered. Meanwhile, Will is dyslexic and had a rough childhood, which is putting it lightly. They are two sides of the same coin and are both the best parts of their respective shows.

Peacock Released A Monk Movie In 2023

Monk Returned 14 Years After Its Series Finale

Not only does Monk have eight seasons and 125 episodes that Will Trent fans can watch while waiting for season 4, but it also has a follow-up film. The USA Network mystery comedy-drama aired its finale in December 2009. Fourteen years later, Peacock released Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie.

The film featured the return of several cast members, including Tony Shalhoub, and was written by series creator Andy Breckman. Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie chronicles Shalhoub’s character coming out of retirement to solve one last case. It received high praise and was even nominated for an Emmy. So, it’s safe to say that Monk is perfect for Will Trent lovers.
