SWAT Spinoff Begins Filming As Shemar Moore Unites With New Cast In First Look

The latest update on the S.W.A.T. Exiles spinoff reveals the new team. Shemar Moore will reprise the lead role of Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson Jr in S.W.A.T. Exiles, a spinoff announced just days after the S.W.A.T. series finale in May. Jay Harrington and Patrick St. Esprit are likewise returning as Sergeant David “Deacon” Kay and Commander Robert Hicks, appearing in the premiere episode.

The spinoff, on the whole, will focus on pairing Hondo with a younger group of characters for a high-stakes mission. Moore will be sharing the screen with a new S.W.A.T. cast, including Lucy Barrett (Deep Water), Adain Bradley (Warfare), Zyra Gorecki (La Brea), Freddy Miyares (When They See Us), and 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s Ronen Rubinstein.

As production begins, Variety reveals the first look at the new team. The project, produced by Sony Pictures Television, is filming in Los Angeles and maintaining the same crew that worked on the original CBS series. Check out the photo below:

The start of filming comes as Sony Pictures TV plans to unveil the spinoff at Mipcom in Cannes, along with other series. As of yet, the project does not have a home announced. That means it could end up on Netflix, where S.W.A.T. already streams, or a traditional broadcast network such as CBS. That uncertainty may clear up in the coming weeks and months.

The plot of the spinoff is confirmed, however. It will take shape after a high-profile mission goes wrong, causing Hondo to come out of his forced retirement. The veteran goes on to lead an experimental unit made up of new and untested recruits. Ultimately, Hondo will have to handle generational divides and clashing personalities to protect the city.

Actor Name Other Notable Roles
Lucy Barrett Kaela Danso (Charmed), Aimee Maxwell (Deep Water)
Adain Bradley Sgt. Laerrus (Warfare), Grant (Tarot)
Zyra Gorecki Izzy Harris (La Brea)
Freddy Miyares Raymond Santana (When They See Us), Skel (DMZ), José (The L Word: Generation Q)
Ronen Rubinstein T.K. Strand (9-1-1: Lone Star), Nathan (Orange Is the New Black), Matt Webb (American Horror Stories)

The project hails from Jason Ning, who serves as showrunner. Ning, who previously worked on Lucifer, serves as executive producer alongside Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty of Original Film, as do Shemar Moore, James Scura, and Jon Cowan. Moore and Ning reflected on the start of production, with their statements included below:

Moore: “Get ready for S.W.A.T. 2.0! After eight incredible years of defying the odds and entertaining the world, we’re about to take the franchise to a whole new level—bigger, better, and edgier. With a fresh cast and a darker, more intense Hondo, we’re ready to bring this story to life and show you what we’ve created together. Thanks to the fans and Sony for keeping us alive, you won’t want to miss what’s next.”

Ning: “It’s been electric being back on set. You can feel the creative energy shift. We’re honoring what made S.W.A.T. great while reinventing it through this scrappier, more character-driven lens. The new cast came in hungry, the crew’s firing on all cylinders, and it already feels like Exiles has its own heartbeat.”

Now that S.W.A.T. Exiles has started filming, it will likely only be a matter of time before we learn about how the spinoff will serve as its own unique follow-up to the cancelled S.W.A.T. season 9. That includes casting for any supporting characters and further plot details that will help to explain how Hondo got to the next chapter of his career.
