Georgie & Mandy Season 2 Takes Mary in a Bold New Direction After George Sr.’s Death

When Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage returns for its second season on CBS, more than a year will have passed since the death of George Sr. on Young Sheldon left Mary Cooper a widow. Steve Holland, who was the showrunner on both shows, recently teased what fans can expect to see Mary get up to when she appears on Georgie & Mandy Season 2.

Speaking with TVLine, Holland revealed that the third episode of Georgie & Mandy Season 2 will see Mary Cooper toying with going out on a date, a monumental development that will seemingly not sit well with her Texas-set children, Georgie and Missy. “The headline of the episode is Mary is considering going out on a date,” revealed Holland, who added that the episode will deal with the “repercussions that that wreaks across the family.” The Georgie & Mandy showrunner/series co-creator also seemed to hint that a familiar location will be used for where Mary tells her children about her desire to re-enter the dating pool.

Georgie & Mandy Season 2, Episode 3 will mark the first appearance of the Cooper dining room within the Young Sheldon sequel series. On hand for the momentous occasion will be series regulars Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment), their daughter CeeCee, and returning Young Sheldon alums Missy (Raegan Revord) and Mary (Zoe Perry). “It was really interesting to shoot [there] again because it’s [now] a multi-cam set,” explained Holland. “There’s not as many people at the table as there once was, but it’s a classic Cooper dinner scene.”

The Cooper Family Reunion Will Be Missing a Key Cast Member

Annie Potts as Meemaw in Young Sheldon

One Young Sheldon character who will be notably absent from the Cooper family dinner will be Annie Potts’ Meemaw. While she was a recurring guest star in Georgie & Mandy Season 1, Potts’ availability has now become limited following her casting as a series regular on Fox’s upcoming medical comedy Best Medicine, which shoots on the East Coast. Despite this, Holland is hopeful to get Potts in an episode or two of Georgie & Mandy Season 2.

“We’re certainly talking about it,” Holland says. “I think she would love to come back. We would love to have her back. The scheduling for that hasn’t worked out yet, but I’m optimistic that it will at some point this season. She’s such a part of the family, and she’s just such a force of nature. But it’s not just another show — it’s another show that shoots on the other side of the country, so it’s tricky for her to fly back for 24 hours and then fly back to New York.”

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage Season 2 premieres on CBS on Thursday, Oct. 16, and streams the next day on Paramount+.
