With a Boston Blue cast that includes Ernie Hudson, Maggie Lawson, Gloria Reuben, and Marcus Scribner, Danny will have another goal as he settles into the new city: reconnecting with his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), who is beginning his job with the police. The premise was previewed in the spinoff’s premiere, which is getting off to a strong start.

With five reviews, Boston Blue is starting with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The number is not final, and it will likely fluctuate as more reviews are added. It is also worth noting that that only Blue Bloods season 1 is tracked on Rotten Tomatoes. It comes in at 84%, while the remaining 13 seasons do not have a score.

The reviews all agree that the spinoff, from showrunners and executive producers Brandon Sonnier & Brandon Margolis, delivers on the original’s ethos of police work combined with family drama. That is clear when looking at the characters that Danny is now surrounded with, also tied to law enforcement in one way or another.

Actor Character Notes
Donnie Wahlberg Danny Reagan NYPD detective who relocates to Boston.
Sonequa Martin-Green Lena Silver Danny’s new partner.
Ernie Hudson Reverend Edwin Peters Lena’s grandfather and a respected pastor.
Maggie Lawson Sarah Silver Superintendent of the Boston PD and Lena’s stepsister.
Gloria Reuben Mae Silver Matriarch of the Silver family and the Boston District Attorney.
Marcus Scribner Jonah Silver Rookie patrol officer of the Silver family and Lena’s brother.
Mika Amonsen Sean Reagan Danny’s son, following in his family’s footsteps.

But despite the spotlight on the Silvers, Boston Blue doesn’t forget its connections to its popular CBS predecessor. Sean is a big part of the new show, with the Blue Bloods role getting recast. The premiere also features Bridget Moynahan, reprising her role as Danny’s sister Erin Reagan, and there is another pivotal cameo that viewers may not expect.

Time will tell if the Silvers will have as lengthy of a run as Blue Bloods‘ Reagan family. But, just going by the early reviews, it sounds like the spinoff succeeds in part because it is populated with familiar faces from across movies and television. Martin-Green played Michael Burnham in Star Trek: Discovery, while Hudson is a Ghostbusters veteran. Reuben, Lawson, and Scribner are respectively known for ERPsych, and Black-ish.

After the end of Blue Bloods, it may be a tough needle to thread to honor the past while still establishing the new show. It is probable, as well, that Boston Blue will have less of a review spotlight as it goes along. That is common for network shows. But for viewers on the fence about the spinoff, it may well be worth checking it out early and seeing how the story evolves.
