Dr Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) in The Good Doctor is both autistic and has savant syndrome. This does mean he can be too trusting at times and doesn’t realise when people are taking advantage of him, much to the frustration of fans of the ABC drama. So when Kenny (Chris D’elia) was introduced in series two, viewers knew he would be trouble.
This was an adventure of firsts for Shaun as it was his first time driving, doing karaoke and he even got his first kiss.
But while Shaun was enjoying himself, the time spent together gave Lea clarity and made her realise she wanted to quit her job and pursue her dream back home of restoring vintage cars.
So when Lea moved out, someone new took her apartment and it wasn’t a change for the better.
Shaun’s new neighbour in season two was Kenny who seemed to be a fun person to be around at first.
He got to know Shaun and they started spending more time together watching TV, eating dinner and playing video games.
When Kenny broke up with his girlfriend, he left Shaun a note saying: “Shaun, Thanks for being there for me. Your best bro, Kenny.”
While this was all true, Kenny also took advantage of Shaun throughout the series.
Prior to the breakup, Shaun paid for Kenny and his girlfriend to go to a theme park, regularly uses his cable hookups, eats his food and has admitted to taking money from him.
What happened to Shaun Murphy’s neighbour Kenny?
Shaun only started realising something wasn’t right when he brought a pizza to Kenny’s apartment for them to share.
Kenny was holding a party which he had “borrowed” Shaun’s television for without his permission.
When Shaun asked if he could join the party, Kenny said his quirks… [don’t] really jive with this kind of face time”.
Kenny then took the pizza out of Shaun’s hands before shutting the door in his face.
Showrunner David Shore told Indie Wire: “It was important that we have a contrast in that neighboring apartment.
“I want to see if Shaun copes with everything. He had a fantastic neighbor at the start of the season.
“How’s he going to cope with a neighbor who’s significantly less good, but who has strengths as well and has attractions as well? Kenny is fun.
“We’re attracted to fun people, so that’s why we wanted to go with that.”
In the season finale of The Good Doctor season two, Lea moved back home as something happened.
Shaun didn’t ask what happened, much to Lea’s annoyance, so to make up for it, he recreated their road trip in his apartment with disco lights and karaoke.
Although initially reluctant to forgive him, Lea gave up and joined with singing.
During this scene, Shaun then tells Lea Kenny had been arrested but doesn’t divulge what his neighbour did.
Following this episode though, Kenny was not seen again in The Good Doctor.
As Kenny was no longer living at the block of flats, Shaun had made a decision.
