When it debuted on Paramount+ in November 2024, Landman was relatively well-received by critics, although audiences took some time to warm to it. The first season of the series certainly wasn’t without its flaws, but it still demonstrated the potential to become one of the best neo-Western shows on television.
With Billy Bob Thornton as formidable as ever in the title role, this drama set in the oil fields of Texas is quite unlike any other Taylor Sheridan Western. The ongoing development of as many as five different Yellowstone spinoffs might be getting more attention, but Landman is the Sheridan-created show we should be getting most excited about.
Landman Season 2 Drops On Paramount+ This Month
Landman season 2 will be back on Paramount+ starting Sunday, November 16, with one new episode per week until January 18. The season premiere is set to pick things up with Tommy Norris having just been saved by a cartel boss played by Andy Garcia. Season 1’s thrilling cliffhanger leaves the forthcoming episodes with plenty to unpack.
This Season Of Landman Could Be Even Better Than Yellowstone
If we weren’t already excited enough about the prospect of Billy Bob Thornton and Sam Elliott teaming up, then Landman season 2’s trailer has given us a taste of what to expect from Elliott’s character. He’s just as fearsome as we’d expect, but also has a seemingly strained relationship with his son.
What’s more this season of Landman is set to reveal the villainous truth about Jon Hamm’s Monty Miller, although the show will now rightly turn its focus to his widowed wife, Cami, played by Demi Moore. With so much acting talent involved in the season, it’s highly likely that it could top even the best we’ve seen from Yellowstone.
It’s important to note, too, the extent to which Taylor Sheridan seems to be prioritizing Landman over his other projects. Yellowstone spinoffs Y: Marshals and The Dutton Ranch have already been farmed out to other writers and showrunners, while Sheridan has taken a step back from Tulsa King for its third season. Clearly, Landman is the show he’s interested in.
Landman Has The Potential To Be Taylor Sheridan’s Best Neo-Western Show
Landman’s season 1 Rotten Tomatoes score of 78% might seem unremarkable, but Taylor Sheridan shows tend to do better on Rotten Tomatoes in season 2. It’s worth bearing in mind that only 58% of the reviews for Yellowstone season 1 were positive, but for season 2 that figure jumped up to 89%.
| Season | Yellowstone RT Score | Landman RT Score |
|---|---|---|
| Season 1 | 58% | 78% |
| Season 2 | 89% | TBC |
| Season 3 | 100% | – |
| Season 4 | 91% | – |
| Season 5 | 79% | – |
There’s every indication that Landman could follow a similar trajectory with its second season. If it does, the show will almost certainly be regarded as Taylor Sheridan’s best neo-Western TV series. It’s time for John Dutton and Yellowstone to move aside. There’s a new sheriff in town, and his name’s Tommy Norris.
