NCIS Star Mark Harmon Opens Up About His Surprise Cameo — And Whether He’ll Return Again

We’re moments away from having Mark Harmon back on our TV screens—and we finally have a sneak peek of what he’s up to.

Fans of the actor know he’s become a household name for his portrayal of Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS. While Mark exited the CBS drama back in 2021, he’s continued to play the role in a voiceover manner on NCIS: Origins. But when viewers learned that Mark would return to the franchise and film scenes for an epic crossover event on November 11, 2025, they were immediately curious about what Gibbs had been up to over the years.

Thanks to an Instagram post from NCIS on November 6viewers got a preview of Mark back in the role that put him on the TV map. The clip shows Gibbs sitting at home, writing notes from an old case in a notebook and seemingly teasing his involvement with the NCIS teams, past and present.

“Mark Harmon is back as Gibbs on #NCISOrigins!” the caption read alongside the video. “Is he revisiting the past with Lala? Watch an exclusive sneak peek at Tuesday’s crossover event with #NCIS!”

As soon as folks got a glimpse of Mark stepping back into character as Gibbs, they couldn’t help but get emotional.

“I really can’t believe we’re actually getting him back. This is like the best thing ever 🥹,” one person wrote in the comments. “Welcome home, Gibbs!!” another shouted. “Welcome back, Gibbs. The entire NCIS family misses you, deeply,” a different follower added.

While we aren’t sure if this is the beginning of Mark’s on-screen involvement with the NCIS franchise, we’re certainly excited to see him back on television! As he told TV Insider in an interview published on November 10, he’s definitely intrigued by the idea of coming back in a new capacity.

“I try really hard to think about what’s best for the show or what possibly can work for this show,” he explained to the outlet. “But part of that also is giving them the ability to write what they feel is right for the reasons they feel it’s right … I’m reminded by that because it’s exactly what the mothership was when it first debuted. And this is on a similar path, which is not a bad idea if it works. So we’ll see.”
