Selleck played Frank Reagan across all 14 seasons of the show between 2010 and 2024, starring alongside Donnie Wahlberg, Bridget Moynahan, Will Estes, Marisa Ramirez, and Len Cariou among others. Playing out as both a standard cop show and a family drama, the series was a popular addition to CBS’ line-up, and Selleck still doesn’t understand why the show was canceled while it was still a consistent performer. He told Hour Detroit:
“It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it. When we went off the air, we were the No. 6 show out of 100 on broadcast television. It was actually No. 9, but if you get rid of the football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television. I’ve been on a lot of sets that were miserable, where the cast didn’t like each other, but in Blue Bloods, everyone was professional and everyone liked each other. That is so rare.”
Would Tom Selleck Join Donnie Wahlberg in ‘Boston Blue’?
“I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue — that’s another show. I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan. I can’t predict the future. But I would like to do a comedy because I’ve done a few that were successful.”
If Boston Blue continues on for several seasons, then the likelihood of Selleck making an appearance in the series will probably increase, but fans shouldn’t expect him to become any kind of series regular. It is clear that the actor still doesn’t really understand why the decision was made to end Blue Bloods, and this becomes even less clear when considering Boston Blue is essentially the same show, set in a different city, without Selleck. Perhaps, it is not surprising that Selleck now just wants to do his own thing, and remember the series as a great thing he did in the past.
