Shock: Actor Donnie Wahlberg (Detective Danny Reagan) has passed away md20

Donnie Wahlberg is onto the next!

Seven months after Blue Bloods‘ series finale, the actor has officially started work on the spinoff series about his character, Danny Reagan.

The spinoff, Boston Blue, was announced in February and given a straight-to-series order by CBS. In the new series, the longtime NYPD officer will take a position with Boston PD.

In a post on his Instagram Stories, the 55-year-old shared a photo of the spinoff’s first table read. The script was on the table in front of him — the pilot episode was written by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis and directed by Anthony Hemingway, all of whom are new names to the Blue Bloods world — and his name tag read “Danny Reagan.”

“A new chapter 💙,” he captioned the photo, which he tagged his costar Sonequa Martin-Green in, too.

The Walking Dead alum, 40, will play Wahlberg’s partner in the spinoff, a detective and the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family, per the official logline.

Boston Blue was described as a “universe expansion” of Blue Bloods by CBS when it was first announced, and the New Kids on the Block singer has been candid about how important it is to him to keep the original show’s energy at the center of the spinoff.

“I’ll just say the journey of developing this show, it’s really fun letting Danny be a fish out of water, to be in this new world. It’s also important to remember where he comes from and what the Blue Bloods legacy is,” he told Parade.

“We’re keeping all of that at the forefront of our thoughts as we build this thing.”

The question of whether Tom Selleck, who played Wahlberg’s onscreen dad for 14 seasons, will reprise his role as Frank Reagan is at the top of fans’ minds — and Wahlberg knows it.

When asked about whether Selleck could appear on Boston Blue, Wahlberg teased that Danny’s new home and his former home city are “not that far apart.”

“New York and Boston are really close,” he told Parade.
