Multiple Game Of Thrones Sequels In Development, Confirms George RR Martin md20

As the franchise continues to expand, author George R.R. Martin has now reportedly confirmed that multiple Game of Thrones sequels are in the works. After Game of Thrones ended in 2019, two prequel spinoff series have already been brought to fruition at HBO with House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

According to Los Siete Reinos, Martin revealed at the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival that, in addition to the already-known prequel spinoffs, there’s also “a sequel or two” in development. However, Martin didn’t give any indication as to which characters the potential Game of Thrones sequel projects would follow:

Apart from A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms & House of the Dragon, there are other Game of Thrones spinoff projects in development. The majority are prequels, and there are several in development – maybe 5 or 6 shows. And I’m not developing them alone, I’m working on them with other people. And yes, there’s a sequel or two [in the works].

It’s unclear whether the sequels in development are TV shows or films, though there have been reports on either side kicked around over the years since the original series’ finale. In the past, Kit Harington had been working with HBO to potentially develop a sequel series surrounding Jon Snow, who headed Beyond the Wall with the free folk in Game of Thrones‘ final moments. However, it was revealed in 2024 that the Jon Snow spinoff was effectively canceled.

As such, it’s unlikely the sequels that Martin is referring to in November 2025 are related to the shelved Jon Snow series. However, with no details about those projects, there’s always the potential that Harington’s Jon Snow could still be included in a future sequel as part of a larger ensemble.

It was also reported back in October 2024 that a Game of Thrones movie was in development at Warner Bros., though it’s unclear whether the film was intended as a prequel or sequel. While there have been little to no details since the initial reports, it’s possible that said movie is one of the sequel projects Martin has in the works.

Since Game of Thrones‘ ending saw Maisie Williams’ Arya Stark sailing to discover “what’s west of Westeros,” there have also been numerous calls for an Arya-focus sequel series over the years. An Arya-focused show would be among the most likely contenders for a post-Game of Thrones timeline spinoff, with other potential story set-ups from the finale being Bran’s arc as King of Westeros or Sansa’s new role as the Queen in the North.

Of course, multiple sequels being in development also opens up the door for a Game of Thrones series focused on a brand-new character or group of characters in this world. Since George R.R. Martin has yet to publish the A Song of Ice and Fire-completing novels The Winds of Winter and its planned sequel A Dream of Spring, the books currently don’t give any indication of narratives for potential TV or movie sequels.

Still, while the actual plot of such sequels is unknown, they would be joining an already sizable slate of Game of Thrones prequel spinoffs in the works with intriguing concepts. Those already in development include the confirmed Aegon’s Conquest, following King Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros, as well as the unconfirmed The Golden Empire, about the Golden Empire of Yi Ti, The Sea Snake, focusing on the exploits and voyages of young Corlys Velaryon before House of the Dragon, and 10,000 Ships, detailing the story of Princess Nymeria of the Rhoynar leading her people to Dorne.

With House of the Dragon renewed for season 4 and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms already renewed for season 2 ahead of its series premiere on January 18, 2026, HBO already has a stacked slate of Game of Thrones stories hitting the small screen through 2028. However, with so many prequels in the works, and a repeated focused on House Targaryen, there’s still room and demand for sequels and more distinctive stories to expand the franchise further beyond the next few years.
