Belly, Conrad and Jeremiah’s big screen debut isn’t happening quite yet.
“The Summer I Turned Pretty” author and showrunner Jenny Han revealed on Dec. 2 that the movie adaptation of the hit series is progressing, though filming has not started yet.
The Prime Video series, which has garnered a cult-like following since premiering in 2022, released its third and final season earlier this year.
It follows Belly Conklin, a teenager who travels to the fictional Cousins Beach with her family each summer. There, she finds herself caught in a love triangle between two brothers, Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher.
After the release of the Season 3 finale in September, Prime Video announced that the series will officially conclude with a feature film written by Han. Here’s what we know about the movie so far.
When is ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ movie coming out? Here’s the latest
While speaking at TheWrap’s Power Women Summit on Dec. 2, Han revealed that the movie is progressing, though it’s still in early stages.
“I just wrote it,” Han said. “We have not filmed anything yet.”
While she acknowledged that some fans were hoping for a Christmas release, Han confirmed the movie won’t be coming this holiday season.
“We had 11 episodes this season and we were filming for most of last year and then still in post (production) up until June and the show came out in July,” she said. “So it was really up to the minute, last minute on the show, so we wouldn’t have had time to film a whole movie.”
Jenny Han talks Easter eggs, music in ‘TSITP’
During the panel, moderator Jo Ling Kent also asked Han about her favorite so-called Easter eggs or clues sprinkled in the show over the years.
“I don’t really think of them as clues per se, just sort of building up the story and doing maybe narrative foreshadowing from things from Season 1 to Season 3 that doesn’t really pay off for a while, for a few years I guess,” she said.
As for her strategy, Han said one approach she takes is through music choice.
“For Belly and Conrad, they have a lot of celestial imagery and iconography around their love story. So a lot of the music I pick for them has that,” she said.
Fans of the show know that a lot of its music has been tapped from Taylor Swift’s discography. Han revealed earlier this year on the “Open Book with Jenna” podcast that she penned a handwritten note to the singer to ask for permission to use her music in the show.
“I just said how much it would mean not just to me, but I thought, to the fans,” Han said, adding that Swift “is someone who bets on women. And I feel like she bet on me. And I can’t say enough how thankful I am that she let us use her music.”
Swift herself also opened up about her love for the show in an interview with “On Air with Ryan Seacrest” earlier this year.
“This show has completely used my music in the most thoughtful, beautiful ways in the most important moments in Belly’s life,” she said. “I’m here for whatever is next.”
