‘Tracker’ Star Teases Answers to the Show’s Biggest Mystery in Season 2 Finale

A little over a year ago, the CBS series Tracker came out of nowhere to become the most watched network TV show of 2024, and for good reason. Developed by Ben H. Winters and starring Justin Hartley, the series is a throwback to the thrillers of yesteryear where a lone wolf rides into town to save the day. The difference is that Hartley’s character of Colter Shaw actually has some depth to him, and is more than just a one-dimensional macho savior. With the series set to conclude its second season on May 11, Hartley teased that it’s those layers to Shaw that viewers will get to see more of as we head toward the finale.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter about all things Tracker, Hartley touched on the last five episodes of Season 2, two of which have already aired. The remaining three are set to wrap up the series’ sophomore outing, and will thankfully air without interruption, meaning there are no more breaks and fans can expect a new one each week until it’s done. “You are going to get the last five episodes in a row,” Hartley said. “So, you’re getting five separate sort of movies. We call them little movies.”

From the early days of soap operas to his more recent forays into the world of prestige television, Justin Hartley has an impressive acting portfolio.

We like movies, especially ones that have some mystery to them, and Tracker certainly has that in spades. One of the big questions on our minds has always been what really happened to Shaw’s father, Ashton. Who killed him, and how? According to Hartley, it seems as if we’re finally going to get some answers, though don’t expect that to be the end of the story:

“As we’re inching closer to the end of the season, we creep closer and closer to the mystery of what the hell happened to Colter’s father. How did he die? Was there in fact another man in the woods? Did he get pushed; did he get killed? Was it an accident? What the hell is going on with that? I end up with this box that’s been talked about and Dory, my sister (Melissa Roxburgh), brings it to me. And now that I have it, does he go through with it? Does he go through with it and open up that box? Does he want to go down that rabbit hole? He gets a lot of clues and a lot of details about what happened to his father, and who was actually involved. And to see the damage I think is an incredible payoff.”

‘Tracker’ Season 3 Could Flip the Script on Colter Shaw

With Tracker Season 2 being as successful as its predecessor, its Season 3 renewal came as no surprise when it was announced back in February of this year. Since it’s a network show, fans can expect it to return sometime in the fall, rather than having to wait a year or two like we do with streaming shows.

As to what we can expect when Hartley and company come back? “We have a couple of ideas,” the star said, adding that things could get a little messy for Shaw in the next season should the hunter become the hunted:

“One of these is that Colter has all of these skills; he’s a survivalist and he knows how to be alone, and he knows how to find people and he’s gifted in that regard. He’s a great listener. But it would be interesting, I think, to see him be set up. In other words, to see him using all those skills to run from the authorities, because you’ve been set up for whatever reason. I’d love to have all that tie into the family background, the government. So, we’ll see. We’ve been kicking that idea around. We have a lot of different stuff that we’re talking about. We have the underlying theme of what we’re going to do next year, while not really changing the direction of where our story is going.”

Look for the remaining episodes of Tracker Season 2 to air every Sunday until its conclusion on May 11. Past episodes, including Season 1, are available to stream on Paramount+.
