A former Navy SEAL and Livestock Commissioner, Kayce Dutton is recruited into the U.S. Marshals to fight Montana’s “gangs, cartel, and race warriors.” Kayce is a natural lead for an action-adventure series, as he was the most formidable fighter in Yellowstone, taking out numerous enemies who wanted the Dutton family’s land.

Duttons aren’t generally optimistic and happy-go-lucky, but Kayce has always been particularly tortured. Y: Marshals doesn’t give the youngest son of John Dutton III (Kevin Costner) the peace he hoped for after he, his wife Monica (Kelsey Asbille), and son Tate (Brecken Merrill) retired to East Camp after Yellowstone.

Kayce Dutton’s recruitment into the U.S. Marshals and return to a violent life of law enforcement is a tragic turn of events, not one to be celebrated. Unfortunately, becoming the lead of Y: Marshals makes Kayce Dutton the saddest of the surviving Duttons after Yellowstone ended.

Compared to Kayce, Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) has more reasons to look forward to her post-Yellowstone life. Beth is happily married to the love of her life, Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser). Beth is also the most business-savvy of the Duttons, and she has the brains and resources to make a comfortable living.

Kayce’s career options are relatively limited. Beth’s brother was never much of a rancher, and violence follows him around. Joining the U.S. Marshals makes sense for Kayce to utilize his skills to the utmost, but it’s a betrayal of his hopes and dreams to move beyond the bloodshed that haunts him.

Poor Kayce is locked in a perpetual cycle of gun-toting and fighting, despite his hopes otherwise. Worse, Kayce may be forced to raise Tate as a single parent, given the context clues about the absence of Kelsey Asbille’s Monica from the cast of Y: Marshals.

Y: Marshals Trailer May Have Confirmed Monica Dutton’s Fate

Kayce Dutton grave Y Marshals Yellowstone

Monica Dutton is neither seen nor heard in Y: Marshals‘ trailer, and Kayce’s narration doesn’t mention his wife. Yet context clues could explain what happened to Monica, as Kayce is seen kneeling at a grave at what appears to be East Camp, as opposed to the Duttons’ family cemetery at their former ranch.

Monica Dutton is likely dead when Y: Marshals begins, and the loss of his beloved wife helps push Kayce towards his new career with the U.S. Marshals. After all, if Monica were alive, Kayce would have no real reason to fight unless she or Tate were threatened.

Kayce wanted to live happily ever after with his wife and son after Yellowstone. Monica dying, or even leaving him if she is alive, would be a knife in Kayce’s heart. Whether or not Kelsey Asbille appears in Y: Marshals in any capacity, Monica won’t be a recurring presence.

Kayce Dutton’s comeback in Y: Marshals, the first of a slew of upcoming Yellowstone spinoffs, is exciting for fans. Unfortunately for Kayce, the sadder his life gets, the more compelling his story becomes.
