Speaking with Variety, Sanders explained how, if there were ever any spinoffs for The Summer I Turned Pretty after the show ends, it would be up to Han whether they happened. The Amazon MGM Studios TV executive explained how the core focus for the show right now is finishing out the final season. Check out what Sanders said below:
You know, all plans lead with Jenny Han, and she’s known from the beginning, how she’s wanted to do this, so we’ve been focused on this, getting the season right and ending it the right way. And I think once the full thing is released, we’ll be able to have more conversations with her. She’s got new ideas that she’s been dying to tackle. So whatever Jenny wants to do, we want to do it with her.
What The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Future Looks Like Beyond Season 3
Could More Stories Beyond The Novels Get Told?
As the Prime Video series has progressed, it’s become clear The Summer I Turned Pretty characters’ stories are likely going to end with season 3. Since Han authored the original trilogy, it makes sense that her vision for the books on the small screen will be complete. Whether this leaves room for more stories remains to be seen.
However, Han is no stranger to creating original spinoffs of her own work. She’s also the author of the To All the Boys I Loved Before trilogy, serving as executive producer on their movie adaptations. Later, she created the spinoff TV show XO, Kitty, an original work based on her characters set in the same universe as the movies.
XO, Kitty season 3 is currently confirmed, with filming having wrapped on July 17, 2025. Because the show isn’t directly based off any stories from within Han’s novels, it opens the door for original stories featuring The Summer I Turned Pretty characters. While it doesn’t mean a spinoff is happening, it makes one more likely to happen at some point.
Our Take On The Summer I Turned Pretty’s Potential Spinoffs
More Stories In The Same World Isn’t Impossible
Given that XO, Kitty shares the same continuity as the To All the Boys I Loved Before trilogy, it wouldn’t be surprising if The Summer I Turned Pretty is the start of a new shared universe for Han. Her works are perfect for expansion, given the intriguing characters she creates and how some could be explored after their original endings.
