Call the fire department, because things are heating up between Chicago Med’s Dr. John Frost and Chicago Fire paramedic Lizzy Novak.
The pair have had multiple flirty encounters on the medical drama this season, confiding in each other and playfully teasing one another. Thus far, they have yet to take things further, and Novak just cheekily wrote “9-1-1” on Frost’s arm when he asked for her number. But that’s all about to change as Frost and Novak appear to get hot and heavy in the promo for this Wednesday’s Chicago Fire (airing at 9/8c on NBC).
It’s been a while since Fire’s Sylvie Brett and P.D.’s Antonio Dawson or P.D.’s Erin Lindsay and Fire’s Kelly Severide attempted to keep a relationship going across two different shows. Only Fire’s Mouch and P.D.’s Trudy Platt have been able to successfully make it work, even getting hitched. But the creative teams behind the series are determined to give it another try, and not just for one episode.
“Novak will make multiple appearances on Med, and Frost will make multiple appearances on Fire,” Med showrunner Allen MacDonald tells Soaps.com, adding that he and Fire boss Andrea Newman “have been working very closely on making this happen and arcing it out in such a way that we are able to do it on both shows and make it fit the storylines we’re also doing on our individual shows…. We’re both really excited about it.”

There’s a hitch to Novak and Frost’s nascent romance, though: his colleague Naomi, who confessed to having feelings for him. And yes, she may feel that she missed her window now that Frost is flirting with Novak, but is the door truly closed on Naomi and Frost? MacDonald would only share that “there’s a love triangle.”
On Fire, the love triangle is looking more like a square following the revelation that Novak’s paramedic partner Violet is interested in firefighter Vasquez. Novak insisted to her friend that she doesn’t have any feelings for Vasquez despite the fact that she tried to bond with him earlier this season. Now, Novak has moved on with Frost — or is she just in denial and distracting herself from her feelings for Vasquez? In the meantime, Violet took the plunge and invited Vasquez to Molly’s, but he replied, “Maybe some other time.” While it wasn’t a “yes,” it wasn’t a “no,” either, and his smile definitely said, “Interested.”
Between the crossover Novak/Frost relationship and the messy Violet/Vasquez/Novak situation, “none of it is straightforward, and there are a lot of turns and twists, and we’ll see where the triangles and squares end up,” Fire executive producer/director Reza Tabrizi teases.
