Hyacinth’s (Florence Hunt) season of Bridgerton is still quite a ways off. The youngest of the Bridgerton clan hasn’t even debuted in society yet, after all! Still, that hasn’t stopped us from reading ahead to find out how her journey ends in It’s In His Kiss, which is the second-to-last installment in Julia Quinn’s book series.
In the weeks leading up to Bridgerton Season 4, Hunt confessed to having only read Hyacinth’s book. The actress also mentioned she was considering getting a head start in learning Italian, which is crucial to the plot of It’s In His Kiss. If you have yet to read the book, Hunt’s comments might have made you curious about how Hyacinth’s story unfolds, including her romantic endgame. Keep reading for an It’s In His Kiss plot breakdown and full explanation of Hyacinth’s love story.
Who does Hyacinth end up with in Bridgerton?
At 22 years old, the outspoken, whip-smart Hyacinth has already spent three seasons out in society. She was eager to find a husband at first, but she’s not quite so fond of the marriage mart after rejecting multiple suitors that weren’t on her level. As Eloise (Claudia Jessie) would say, Hyacinth is almost “on the shelf” when her book takes place, but not quite.
Enter: Gareth St. Clair, with whom Hyacinth finally finds her match. When It’s In His Kiss begins, Hyacinth has been reading to Gareth’s maternal grandmother, Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh), for some time. (Lady Danbury, ever the matchmaker, thinks they would be a perfect couple right away. Violet gets on board, too.)
Before any romantic feelings arise, Gareth and Hyacinth become partners in crime. He asks for her help translating his paternal grandmother’s old diary from Italian to English. Knowing it could lead them to hidden jewels, the equally witty Gareth and Hyacinth set out to solve the mystery, growing closer all the while. Gareth, who secretly struggles with being an illegitimate child, proposes to Hyacinth, which she accepts. They temporarily part ways because Hyacinth doubts Gareth’s feelings for her. She thinks he wants to marry her to spite his father, who cut him off years ago. Further, Gareth admits to “ruining” Hyacinth so that she would marry him.

Hyacinth doesn’t want to abandon the mystery, so she doesn’t cut ties with him. Gareth, having realized he truly does love Hyacinth and doesn’t just want the security her family would offer him, sets out to win her back. They don’t find the jewels, but Hyacinth and Gareth do reconcile, the book ending with Gareth redoing his proposal. Now, he’s asking for the right reasons: He loves her and can’t live without her. With no more secrets between them, Hyacinth accepts again.
Who is Gareth St. Clair?
Gareth is the son of Lady Danbury’s deceased daughter, who had him from an extramarital love affair. Once Gareth’s brother dies as well, his father on paper, Richard, reveals that Gareth is illegitimate, and tries to force him into marriage. The dowry would save the St. Clairs from ruin, after Richard ran their finances into the ground. Gareth refuses and becomes independent, and by the time the main events of the book start 10 years later, he’s known for being a charming and witty former rake.
