The Office is one of the most re-watched shows around. Re-runs are constantly airing on TV and many people find comfort in streaming the comedy over and over again. (And endlessly quoting it and using reaction GIFs from the series whenever appropriate.) Because of this, the employees at Dunder Mifflin are sort of stuck in the past. We’re used to seeing the stars of The Office as their aughts selves beneath the glow of the florescent lights, even though many of the actors are still appearing in popular shows and movies (and in commercials for cereal) today.
With it being 20 years since the show premiered and in light of the Office spinoff, The Paper, premiering on September 4th, 2025, lets take a look at the cast of the The Office then versus now, and see what they’ve been up to in their careers.
Steve Carell
We have to start with the manager of Dunder Mifflin, Michael Scott. Steve Carell made the character into a household name before leaving the series in season 7. Since then, Carell has starred in movies including The Big Short, Beautiful Boy, Vice, Asteroid City, and Foxcatcher for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor. He also recently starred in the TV show The Four Seasons.
Rainn Wilson
Rainn Wilson is best known as paper salesman/beet farmer Dwight Schrute on The Office, but in his time since the show ended, you may have seen him in the TV series Mom and in the movie The Meg, or heard him as the voice of Lex Luthor in various DC animated series.
John Krasinski
John Krasinski went from prank-loving office worker Jim Halpert to an action star thanks to his lead role in the series Jack Ryan. He’s also directed a few films in which he also starred: The Hollars, IF, A Quiet Place, and A Quiet Place Part II.
John Krasinski
The woman behind Pam Beesley is still keeping Office fans entertained. Today, Jenna Fischer hosts the popular podcast Office Ladies along with her best friend and co-star Angela Kinsey. You may have seen her in the Mean Girls musical movie and in the TV show Splitting Up Together.
B.J. Novak
On The Office, B.J. Novak played Ryan Howard, who went through many changes throughout the series from intern, to fraud-committing corporate exec, to founder of WUPHF.com. Novak has since had TV roles in The Mindy Project and The Newsroom. He also wrote, directed, and starred in the movie Vengeance.
Angela Kinsey
Moving on to the accountants… As mentioned above, Angela Kinsey—who played Angela Martin on the show—hosts Office Ladies with Fischer. She’s had roles in Tall Girl, Tall Girl 2, Fresh Off the Boat, and Never Have I Ever.
Brian Baumgartner
You know Kevin Malone for spilling a giant vat of chili and having questionable math skills but still being an accountant. You know Brian Baumgartner for playing Kevin, but also for appearances in The Goldbergs, Chicago Fire, and most recently, Suits LA.
Oscar Nuñez
The last accountant of our trio is Oscar Martinez, played by Oscar Nuñez. Nuñez has had roles in the movies Baywatch, The Lost City, and Disenchanted, and he’s also known for his State Farm commercials. The actor is the only star of The Office who is also returning in The Paper.
Leslie David Baker
Who else have you probably spotted in commercials? Leslie David Baker, who played Stanley Hudson on The Office. He’s popping up in Cheerios ads and has also been doing a lot of voice work lately, including in the movies Vivo and Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, and in the TV shows Doug Unplugs and Puppy Dog Pals.
Phyllis Smith
Phyllis Smith played Phyllis Lapin then Phyllis Vance (Vance Refrigeration) on The Office. She’s also known for voicing Sadness in Inside Out and its sequel, and she had a role in Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar. She’s appeared with her buddy Leslie in some Cheerio ads, too.
Kate Flannery
Among many unique characters on the show, Meredith Palmer was certainly one of the more… fascinating. Sometimes she was getting trapped in a plastic bag with a bat. Sometimes she was getting hit by Michael Scott’s car. The character was played by Kate Flannery, who has since appeared in episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl, and Young Sheldon. She also competed in Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer.
Mindy Kaling
Mindy Kaling played Kelly Kapoor on The Office, and while GIFs of her character are still popular today, she’s also acted in and created many other shows. Kaling starred in and created The Mindy Project, and also created Never Have I Ever and The Sex Lives of College Girls. Her movies include Late Night and Ocean’s 8.
Paul Lieberstein
Paul Lieberstein—who was also the showrunner for The Office for a few seasons—played HR rep and Michael’s enemy Toby Flenderson. Lieberstein has continued to work on-screen and behind-the-scenes on shows including The Newsroom, Space Force, and The Mindy Project.
