This New Chicago Med Love Triangle Feels Pointless — and It’s Time to Drop It md18

Chicago Med’s doctors are no strangers to having messy personal lives that often blur the lines between business and pleasure. Since the doctors spend so much of their time at Gaffney, it’s only natural that they will wind up dating each other, and that always leads to some inevitable overlap, a love triangle here and there, and hurt feelings for more than a few people involved.

The latest love triangle to develop in the most chaotic emergency department in the Midwest happens to be between Asher, Archer, and Kingston, but it’s not one that we’re particularly invested in right now. Chicago Med season 11 episode 11 kicked the love triangle into high gear as Asher and Kingston allowed their personal feelings to carry over while treating a patient.

Even though Asher and Kingston put their differences aside, which allowed the pair to be friends as Archer and Kingston pursued a romantic relationship, Asher clearly still has some residual jealousy about Kingston’s closeness to Archer. Is it just us or does the set-up of this particular love triangle’s stakes look a lot like when Ripley was the third prong in the arrangement?

When Chicago Med season 11 first began and Asher’s pregnancy was revealed, Ripley was eager to become a father and reunite with Asher. However, the reality that Archer was the father of Asher’s baby hit him like a ton of bricks. Working alongside Archer was difficult for Ripley, and their shared animosity for each other resulted in them bickering in the midst of performing surgery.

Ultimately, that love triangle was resolved, and Chicago Med’s showrunner all but confirmed that the series won’t be circling back to rekindle the flame between Asher and Ripley. But we’re now faced with another doctor becoming involved in the complicated dynamic between Asher and Archer as they prepare to welcome a baby together. Isn’t it the same love triangle in reverse?

On paper, yes. Chicago Med is retreading an incredibly similar entanglement, and while the circumstances might be different and could lead to different outcomes, we can’t help but wonder how many more love triangles Asher and Archer could be involved in. Well, the answer is zero, because this storyline is the show’s last chance to get where it wants to go with the parents-to-be.

There’s really only one conceivable way this will end, and that’s with Kingston getting hurt. Archer was apprehensive on starting anything with her since he felt responsible to Asher. The real reason might be that he’s in love with Asher, as Asher’s own father believes, but neither he nor Asher are ready to face the facts of those feelings. She might be getting close, though.

Archer could be moving on in the weeks ahead, allowing himself to push aside however he feels for Asher and falling for Kingston. But the complexities will soon blow up in their faces. It’s probably for the best the Chicago Med doesn’t linger too long on this storyline and drops its second love triangle for Asher and Archer as soon as possible. Just get them together already!
