Emilia Clarke is gearing up for Ponies, a new television drama set in the Cold War era. This will be the first time she will be playing the lead in a television show after the end of Game of Thrones.
While doing press for the show, the actress revealed to The New York Times that she is more or less done with the fantasy genre after playing Daenerys Targaryen.
You’re highly unlikely to see me get on a dragon, or even in the same frame as a dragon, ever again.
The actress, who earned four Emmy nominations for her role, had revealed earlier that she was shocked by seeing how the series finale was changed compared to George R.R. Martin’s books. For fans who were expecting to see her reprise the role sometime in the future (perhaps when Martin finally gets the novels done), this is unfortunate, as the actress seems determined not to return to Westeros.
Emilia Clarke Was Shocked by the Game of Thrones Finale Script
The Game of Thrones series finale was brutal, to say the least, as it butchered George R.R. Martin’s creation and left fans seething even today. Understandably, when Emilia Clarke read the final script and her character’s fate, she was stunned and shocked.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she revealed:
What, what, what, WHAT!? Because it comes out of fucking nowhere. I’m flabbergasted. Absolutely never saw that coming. I cried. And I went for a walk. I walked out of the house and took my keys and phone and walked back with blisters on my feet. I didn’t come back for five hours. I’m like, ‘How am I going to do this?’
She then called her mom.
I called my mom and [told her], ‘I read the scripts and I don’t want to tell you what happens but can you just talk me off this ledge? It really messed me up.’ And then I asked my mom and brother really weird questions. They were like: ‘What are you asking us this for? What do you mean do I think Daenerys is a good person? Why are you asking us that question? Why do you care what people think of Daenerys? Are you OK?’
While she understood why fans were pissed, the actress revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that she has now made her peace with the ending.
Emilia Clarke On How Ponies Gave Her a ‘Voice’

Emilia Clarke is now starring in Ponies, which is an upcoming spy thriller series created by Susanna Fogel and David Iserson. Clarke stars as Bea, one of the two secretaries working at the American embassy in Moscow, who becomes a CIA operative following their husband’s mysterious death.
While talking to The New York Times, Clarke revealed how special the role was.
I felt like they were giving me a voice, which doesn’t always happen.
Yet, signing on for yet another TV show was a bit scary for the actress after Game of Thrones. When she had taken a role in HBO’s hit fantasy show, the actress had no idea that it would end up blowing the way it did.
Now, she is glad to have taken the role while also serving as an executive producer on the show. Clarke felt deeply invested during filming, making sure that everyone was having a nice time.
