After 14 years of watching Tom Selleck command a room and the Sunday dinner table on Blue Bloods, folks tuning in to Boston Blue might feel someone is missing from their screens. The fan-favorite Police Commissioner Frank Reagan (Selleck) is not set to be a character in the spinoff, but with appearances from other members of the Blue Bloods cast and a promise for more in the future, viewers are left wondering whether Selleck will ever reprise his role.
Find out everything the actor and show creators have said about the possibility of Frank Reagan’s return, plus how this Boston Blue star would feel about sharing the screen with him again.
What Tom Selleck has said about appearing on ‘Boston Blue’
It goes without saying that fans of Blue Bloods and Boston Blue would love to see Frank Reagan back in action, whether from afar in New York City or on a trip to Boston. But Selleck himself isn’t too sure about whether a return to the role is likely.

“I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue. That’s another show,” Selleck said. “I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history, but I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan. I can’t predict the future. But I would like to do a comedy because I’ve done a few that were successful.”
What the cast and creators said about Selleck’s potential return
Although Selleck isn’t 100% sure whether he’d want to return as Frank, the creators of Boston Blue, Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, are certainly open to the idea. When asked whether fans may see their favorite characters from Blue Bloods in the new series, they said it’s a possibility.
“We love the idea, and we’re open to it if it makes sense storytelling-wise,” Margolis said. “We’re never closing the door on any of the Reagans or any possibility of bringing pieces from the larger universe into our bubble in Boston.”
The show’s creators aren’t the only ones who have weighed in on the idea. Donnie Wahlberg, who has starred as Frank’s son, Detective Danny Reagan, on both Blue Bloods and Boston Blue, has chimed in on the discussion. Having shared the screen with Selleck for 14 years, Wahlberg says he would love to do it again.
“I can say, would I love for Tom [Selleck] to come up to Boston? Sure,” Wahlberg said. “Or would I love Danny to go to New York and visit Frank? Absolutely, yes. Tom’s always going to base his decisions on the work and material, and so yes, of course, I’d love to work with him on the show, and when the time comes, we will hopefully craft an idea that moves his heart and makes him want to do it.”
Tom Selleck on ‘Blue Bloods’ cancellation
Following the cancellation of Blue Bloods in the winter of 2024, Selleck was extremely vocal about his frustration with the network. Throughout countless interviews, the actor continually shared that he was upset with the show coming to a close.
And it seems he is still unhappy with the decision, as Selleck spoke about it as recently as November 2025.
“It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it,” Selleck said. “When we went off the air, we were the No. 6 show out of 100 on broadcast television. It was actually No. 9, but if you get rid of football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television. I’ve been on a lot of sets that were miserable where the cast didn’t like each other, but in Blue Bloods, everyone was professional and everyone liked each other. That is so rare.”
Even though Blue Bloods had to come to an end, Boston Blue is continuing the Reagan legacy as Danny and his son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), continue to solve crime—just in a new city. As for the return of Selleck, the future is unwritten, so keep your fingers crossed and your eyes peeled.
