The Rookie Shock: Is Nathan Fillion’s Latest TikTok Hinting at a Huge Season Twist? ma01

Nathan Fillion has some comments about the future of The Rookie—and fans have a major question.

As new season 8 episodes of the hit drama air on Monday nights on ABC, folks are locked in as Nathan’s character, John Nolan, works his way up as a cop in LAP Mid-Wilshire. The show has had much success over the last decade, and it’s no secret that viewers hope that The Rookie will continue for as long as possible

In a new TikTok on February 3, Nathan updated fans on where he’s at with The Rookie. In the video, he revealed that season 8 was wrapping up filming before any news on a potential season 9 renewal. But in true Nathan fashion, he also relayed a little humor by teasing his co-star Eric Winter, who plays Tim Bradford.

“Today is Tuesday. It is my second to last day of season 8,” he stated in the clip. “I’m in the van, we’re on our way to the soundstage where we’ll be filming some scenes in the precinct. I’m alone in the van, with the exception of something they sent with me to set … It’s Eric’s seat cushion. We all have chairs, but Eric is delicate. I just wonder why it’s still warm.”

While viewers love seeing Nathan’s updates about The Rookie, this latest announcement had many begging for news on whether they can expect another season on ABC.

“Hey can you guys make season 9 now I kinda need it,” one person asked in the comments. “I HOPE THE ROOKIE NEVER ENDS 😭,” another penned. “We need a season 9 announcement now!!!🙏,” a different follower added.

Even though we don’t know for sure about the future of The Rookie, Nathan is definitely into the idea of the show continuing for season 9. But as he shared with People in November 2025, he does have a contingency plan for when the time comes to say goodbye.

“In 10 years, I would like to be just wrapping up The Rookie, maybe handing it off to someone else,” he told the outlet at the time. “And then spend a soft retirement visiting The Rookie and dabbling in the four to seven Rookie spin-off series that are still going and very, very popular. In the meantime, when I’m not working on those, I would like to be in my beach house.”

Fingers crossed we get more time with The Rookie in the future!
