Danny Reagan is returning to duty and he’s got a big job ahead of him.

PEOPLE can exclusively reveal first-look footage from the midseason return episode of police procedural Boston Blue, which airs on CBS on Friday, Feb. 27.

In the clip, Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) and his son, rookie cop Sean (Mika Amonsen), have a father-son stakeout for the Boston Police Department, before witnessing a crime go down in real time.

“Is this what Grandpa taught you?” Sean asks his dad, who responds with, “Yeah, and he would be proud of two generations of Reagans working the case together.”

After the bonding moment, Sean and Danny watch on as a motorcyclist pulls up to the passenger side of the vehicle they’ve been eyeing. The cyclist knocks on the car’s window, hands the driver a carrier bag and speeds off — before the car explodes while Danny and Sean approach it.

“I’m on the motorcycle, call it in,” Danny directs his son, who approaches the car and tries to aid its burned passenger.

The clip cuts off with Sean in rescue mode, while Danny embarks on what can only be a high-speed chase with the mystery cyclist.

Per a logline from CBS, the episode, titled “Hard Truths,” follows Sean’s BPD partner Jonah (Marcus Scribner) as he comes to terms with the cliffhanger that took place at the end of the show’s previous episode.

“Jonah’s anger and grief put family bonds to the test as Mae and Sarah confront painful truths that could change everything,” the logline reads. “Meanwhile, Danny and Lena take on a high-stakes case that exposes deep-rooted secrets and forces unlikely alliances.”

The return of Boston Blue also means the return of another familiar face from Blue Bloods — Len Cariou. The 86-year-old — who played retired NYPD commissioner and grandfather of Danny, Henry Reagan, in all 14 seasons of the original series — makes his debut in the spin-off and fans got to catch a glimpse of him joining the Boston crew in CBS’s midseason trailer.

Boston Blue also stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Gloria Reuben, Bridget Moynahan and Ernie Hudson, as they round out the Silver law enforcement family. The series debuted in October and follows Wahlberg’s Danny as he swaps cities in an effort to be closer to his son. He then gets to know the Silvers, who share a few similarities with his family back home in New York.

Boston Blue returns Friday, Feb. 27 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and is also available to stream on Paramount+.
