When actors join a long-running television institution, there’s often a mixture of excitement and pressure. Walking onto a set that has been running for decades can feel like entering a well-oiled machine where every cast member already knows their place.
For Corey Cott, however, stepping onto the set of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit felt surprisingly natural. Much of that comfort, he says, came from his immediate rapport with the show’s longtime star, Mariska Hargitay.
In a recent conversation with entertainment reporters, Cott opened up about his experience joining the iconic series and the unexpected “connection” he formed with Hargitay — one that helped him settle into the intense world of SVU almost instantly.
Joining a Television Legacy
For more than two decades, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has been one of the most recognizable crime dramas on television. Since its premiere in 1999, the show has tackled difficult subjects while building a loyal fanbase that spans generations.
Stepping into that universe is no small task.
Cott admits he felt the weight of the show’s legacy before his first day of filming.
“You’re very aware that you’re walking into something that means a lot to people,” he said. “It’s not just another job. SVU has been part of people’s lives for years.”
Yet those nerves quickly faded the moment he met Hargitay, who has led the series as Captain Olivia Benson for most of its run.
“Within five minutes of meeting Mariska, I felt completely at ease,” Cott explained. “She has this incredible warmth that immediately makes you feel like you belong there.”
Mariska Hargitay’s Reputation for Leadership
Inside the television industry, Hargitay is widely known not just as the face of SVU, but also as its emotional center.
Over the years, many guest stars and recurring actors have described the set as welcoming and collaborative — something they often credit to her leadership style.
Cott says he experienced that firsthand.
“Mariska leads with kindness,” he said. “She sets the tone for the entire set. Everyone respects her, but at the same time she makes sure everyone feels heard.”
According to Cott, that environment makes a huge difference when filming emotionally heavy scenes — something SVU is known for.
“Some of the material can be intense,” he noted. “But when you have someone like Mariska guiding the atmosphere, it creates a sense of safety for the actors.”
Finding a Natural On-Screen Rhythm
One of the biggest challenges for actors entering an established series is developing believable chemistry with characters audiences already know well.
For Cott, that process happened faster than expected.
“There was this rhythm between us that clicked right away,” he said. “Sometimes you meet another actor and you just know how to play off each other.”
That natural rapport translated into their scenes together, which required both emotional nuance and professional tension.
Crew members reportedly noticed it too.
One production insider described their dynamic as “effortless.”
“It didn’t feel like two actors trying to figure each other out,” the crew member said. “It felt like they’d been working together for years.”
A Mentor on and Off Camera
Beyond their scenes, Cott says Hargitay also offered guidance that helped him navigate the unique culture of SVU.
After starring in Broadway productions earlier in his career, television sets were familiar territory for him — but SVU operates on a different scale due to its longevity and devoted audience.
Hargitay, he said, gave him simple but meaningful advice.
“She told me, ‘Trust your instincts and remember that the audience connects to honesty.’”
Cott says that philosophy shaped how he approached his performance.
“That stuck with me. It reminded me not to overthink things.”
The Energy of the SVU Set
According to Cott, one of the most striking aspects of working on the series is the level of dedication among the cast and crew.
After so many seasons, many shows can begin to feel routine — but he says that isn’t the case here.
“There’s still a real sense of purpose on that set,” he said. “People care deeply about the stories being told.”
He believes Hargitay plays a major role in maintaining that spirit.
“She keeps everyone motivated. When the lead actor is that passionate after all these years, it inspires everyone else.”
Why the Connection Matters
For viewers, chemistry between actors is often what turns a good scene into a memorable one.
Cott believes his connection with Hargitay helped ground his character within the larger world of the show.
“When the relationship between characters feels real, the audience senses it,” he explained.
He also emphasized that acting partnerships are often built on trust.
“You have to trust the person across from you. With Mariska, that trust was there immediately.”
Fans Notice the Dynamic
While actors often feel chemistry behind the scenes, the ultimate test is whether audiences pick up on it.
In this case, many fans did.
Social media discussions following the episode frequently mentioned the interaction between Cott and Hargitay’s characters.
Some viewers praised the fresh energy their scenes brought to the show.
Others simply enjoyed seeing Benson interact with a new personality.
For Cott, that response was both surprising and gratifying.
“It’s amazing when fans respond to something you worked hard on,” he said. “That’s the goal — to create moments that resonate.”
Respect for a Television Icon
Despite his own growing career, Cott doesn’t hide his admiration for Hargitay’s impact on television.
Through SVU, she has become one of the most recognizable figures in crime drama history.
Her portrayal of Olivia Benson has influenced not just viewers, but also actors entering the industry.
“She’s built something really special with this show,” Cott said.
But what impressed him most wasn’t her fame — it was her humility.
“She treats everyone with respect, whether you’re a guest star or part of the crew.”
Looking Ahead
While Cott’s time on SVU may only represent a chapter in the show’s long history, he says the experience left a lasting impression.
“It’s the kind of set that reminds you why you became an actor in the first place.”
And if the opportunity ever came to return?
He says he wouldn’t hesitate.
“Working with Mariska again would be an absolute joy.”
