Bridgerton Pushes the Ton’s Boundaries With New Faces, Class Crossings, and Expanding Love Stories md18

Dearest gentle reader, if you’re positively captivated by the latest season of “Bridgerton” as much as we are, you’re in luck because the cast has answered some of our burning questions about how part two has unfolded.

And if you haven’t watched the last four episodes yet, which are already streaming on Netflix, you must make haste.

In season 4, the story pulls back the curtain on the side of the ton many haven’t really seen before: the working class. Specifically, household staff like housekeepers, ladies’ maids and valets.

With Sophie Baek (Yerin Ha) and Benedict Bridgerton’s (Luke Thompson) Cinderella-inspired romance, the show’s focus this season on the different class dynamics in the ton, which begs the question about who gets to fall in love in this world and if we’re all worthy of a happily ever after.

On the show, Ha, a maid, meets Bridgerton, whose family is of high-ranking aristocracy, at a masquerade ball, where her identity is concealed by a mask.

Ha, who joined the franchise this past season, said that what makes “Bridgerton” unique is that it gives hope to those who let them know that they belong.

“They are able to take charge of their own narrative and create that happy ending if they allow themselves to,” she told ABC News. “You are in the driver’s seat and it’s up to you to decide if that’s something that you want to create for yourself.”

Actresses who also joined the season were Katie Leung, Isabella Wei and Michelle Mao, who portray Sophie’s stepmother and stepsisters, respectively.

Leung, who many know from her role as Cho Chang in the “Harry Potter” film series, said that channeling a villain in Lady Araminta Gun (Sophie’s stepmother) was “exciting” and “dangerous.”

“The stakes are raised,” Leung said about Lady Araminta’s character in part 2. “It feels like she’s in control, but in actual fact, I think the firing of Sophie is the beginning of seeing her become a little bit out of control because she’s let her emotions kind of get the better of her.”

Leung and Wei added that seeing the addition of East Asian women to help expand the world of “Bridgerton” felt “special.”

When Wei auditioned for the role of Posy, she said that she, of course, wanted the role for herself, but she also wanted it “for everyone else who could have the possibility of it.”

Leung added that it felt “groundbreaking” to see the “Bridgerton” universe expand, adding that the support for diverse representation in the show has been “insane.” She also shared how it’s been to act alongside Wei and Mao.

“I’m just so genuinely joyful and excited to see how ‘Bridgerton’ is going to have such a great impact on everyone’s careers because it gives you the exposure,” she said. “I’m surrounded by three really talented women and it makes you up your game, but also there’s a friendship there that feels really solid and that you’re not alone.”

The world of “Bridgerton” also expands this season with the story development of Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd), who fans saw experience an enormous heartbreak in part two with the death of her husband, John Stirling (Victor Alli).

“John was exactly what she needed and he is somebody who creates space for her,” she said. “I think when you are someone who’s always felt a little bit different to other people, somebody who just accepts you for everything you are and exactly how you are must feel absolutely incredible.”

While the death of John may seem like the end of Francesca’s storyline, season 4, part 2 delved more into the addition of Michaela Stirling, John’s cousin, played by Masali Baduza. Baduza’s character was introduced in season 3 and is rumored to have a potential relationship with Francesca.

Although the addition of Michaela Stirling fostered widespread criticism regarding the direction of Francesca’s love life, Dodd told “GMA” ahead of season 4 that she would be “proud” to be part of that story. “This is a show that celebrates all kinds of love,” she said.

Baduza added that in part 2, John’s death brings Michaela and Francesca closer together.

“People can look forward to her and Francesca really getting to figure out where they stand with one another and they go through an intense experience together and I think that also really brings them closer together,” Baduza said.

With the chapter closed on another season, “Bridgerton” fans can expect to see more romance unfold in “Bridgerton” seasons 5 and 6. In May 2025, it was announced that the new seasons were already confirmed.

On “Bridgerton: The Official Podcast,” showrunner Jess Brownell and executive producer and director Tom Verica talked about where they are in the story process for season 5, and Brownell said, “We’re nearly done with the scripts.”

Until then, you can watch all episodes of “Bridgerton” season 4 now on Netflix.
