Hollywood shock: Yuri Sardarov dies unexpectedly at age 38 md20

It was an explosive One Chicago crossover between Chicago MedChicago Fire, and Chicago P.D. after the death of beloved firefighter Deputy District Chief Cranston was linked to a mass casualty event that demanded all hands on deck.

Viewers first met Cranston in Season 14, Episode 12 (“Coming in Hot”) after Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) reached out for some help after an ill-fated call for him to be investigated by the CFD. From the jump, it was evident that Cranston was willing to move mountains for the sake of helping his friends, leading many to be shocked when he died before through on Pascal’s favor.

Here’s how Cranston’s shocking death played a major role in Fire’s crossover with Med and P.D. (“Reckoning”).

Chicago Fire‘s Deputy District Chief Cranston was good friends with Pascal and Voight

Cranston and Pascal go way back; they both climbed the ranks of the CFD together, so Cranston was eager to help Pascal out whenever he heard he was in a bind. However, after Cranston suffered a heart attack during a call and died, a heartbroken Pascal realized he wouldn’t get much back-up from his dear friend.

Due to his many contributions to the city before his death, the CFD arranged a lavish memorial event in Cranston’s honor during Fire‘s 2026 crossover with P.D. and Med, drawing together hundreds of first responders who crossed paths with the mythic firefighter. With news of the memorial making its way to public radio stations, Pascal found himself contemplative while thinking of his fallen friend.

The radio trilled, “…a decorated firefighter whose career spanned more than three decades. Chief Cranston rose through the ranks after distinguishing himself during the infamous ‘Heart of Chicago Fire’ in 2001, a devastating blaze that claimed 22 lives. He was credited with leading half a dozen civilians to safety, actions that earned him the department’s highest commendations.”

During set-up for the memorial, viewers learned that Cranston was also longtime friends with Intelligence Unit commander Hank Voight (Jason Beghe), whom he worked with for years while tackling some of the city’s most heinous disasters, the 2001 Fire included.

How Chief Cranston died

After a deadly nerve agent sparked a mass casualty event on a commercial aircraft, Firehouse 51 teamed up with the Intelligence Unit — as well as an FBI task force led by P.D. fan favorite Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) — to get to the bottom of it. The Windy City heroes soon learned that every passenger had been killed by a deadly, yet mystifying chemical cocktail that had been unintentionally released by a drug mule.

The culprit responsible for arranging the transport of this deadly chemical was Thomas Marr, a man whose entire family died in the 2001 fire when he was just a boy. After tracking down the chemical dealer and learning Marr had gotten his hands on a tonic that killed people by mimicking the symptoms of a heart attack, a horrific reality dawned on Voight: Cranston, a man with no history of heart issues, hadn’t died naturally. Cranston was murdered, and he was only the first of Marr’s list.
