Young Sheldon executive producer Steve Holland reveals why the show is ending with season 7, and how it makes sense for the series. The Big Bang Theory prequel follows Sheldon Cooper as he is growing up in Texas, prior to the events of the main show. The comedy has amassed its own level of popularity, but will be ending with season 7 this year.
Speaking at The TCAs, Holland revealed why Young Sheldon season 7 will be the final entry in the show. The executive producer said the strength of the series was part of why it ended, as well as lining up with its main character going to CalTech at 14 years old. Check out what Holland had to say below:
It feels like this was the right time for that story to come to an end… to end it strong while it was still on top.
Why Young Sheldon Season 7 Ending The Show Makes Sense
The final season of the show will feature the last days of its main character’s life in East Texas prior to the start of his accelerated college career. Young Sheldon season 6 ends with Sheldon and Mary in Germany, indicating he may be far away from his family when season 7 first begins. However, given the number of character stories that need to be wrapped up by season’s end, he’ll no doubt come back with enough time to finish these storylines.
Holland also confirmed in a recent interview that George will die in season 7, coinciding with comments made by Sheldon about his father during The Big Bang Theory. Because of this upcoming tragic event, the show will no doubt end on a bittersweet note for the Cooper family. However, it also provides a fitting stopping point that makes sense for the time frame the series was always presenting.
While it’s disappointing that Young Sheldon won’t be coming back for season 8, it appears Holland and the rest of the show’s creative team know how they want to contain the story. With a shortened, 14-episode season on its way, the series will have to address its major story points quicker than usual. However, it may also lead to a streamlined final batch of episodes that properly includes the show.
