Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay ‘eats only two bites’ to maintain his good health.
always being exposed to gourmet food, Gordon Ramsay has maintained his toned physique after losing 19 kg, thanks to a balanced diet, disciplined exercise, and the “eat only two bites” principle.
At age 59, renowned chef Gordon Ramsay has undergone a physical transformation. Once weighing 114 kg, Ramsay successfully lost 19 kg, becoming a resilient athlete who regularly conquers marathons, ultramarathons, and even the “Iron Man” challenge, the most grueling race on the planet.
In an interview with Men’s Health magazine in 2024, Ramsay affirmed his philosophy of simple eating: “Delicious food doesn’t have to be boring, and healthy food doesn’t need to chase the latest dieting trends.”
The celebrity chef admitted that during the peak of his career, he was caught up in a whirlwind of work, working seven days a week, which caused his body to lose control. Determined to “reclaim lost time,” he began a transformation journey. Sharing about his daily menu, the MasterChef judge said: “I drink a protein smoothie for breakfast, have scrambled eggs for lunch, and choose boiled chicken or fish for dinner. I don’t eat too much salad, but I always try to balance my nutrition.”
However, the key to Ramsay’s weight maintenance lies not only in the ingredients of his food but also in his tasting principles. The nature of a chef requires him to sample countless gourmet dishes every day, but Ramsay always limits himself to just a second bite, no matter how tempting the dish may be.
“Initially, I always craved devouring the entire plate of food. But I knew that after the fourth, fifth, or sixth bite, things would spiral out of control. So, I told myself to stop after two bites. That self-control is what helps me maintain my physique,” Ramsay said.
From a medical perspective, Ramsay’s method reflects a scientifically sound portion control strategy, although abrupt reductions can put pressure on the appetite center. Medical experts recommend that for sustainable results, a diet rich in protein from fish, beans, and eggs should be combined to stimulate hunger-suppressing hormones and maintain muscle mass. Furthermore, eating speed plays a crucial role in regulating taste. When food enters the stomach, the body releases leptin, a hormone that creates a feeling of fullness and suppresses appetite. Leptin takes at least 20 minutes to signal satiety to the brain; therefore, eating slowly and limiting leptin-resistant foods like carbonated drinks are key to mastering taste.
Additionally, changing the order of eating according to the rule: fiber – protein – carbohydrates is also a helpful tip. Eating fiber first helps slow down digestion and prevent sudden spikes in blood sugar. Moving carbohydrates to the end of the meal helps us naturally reduce our intake because the body has already started to feel full thanks to the fiber and protein consumed earlier.
