Lola Tung Delivers Shocking Update on ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Movie [Exclusive]

The heat may have been blazing last summer, but the temperatures were soaring off the charts over at Prime Video during the final season of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Over three seasons, viewers gleefully tagged along with Jenny Han as she brought her beloved trilogy of novels to the small screen in what would become one of the most celebrated adaptations in recent memory. Starring Lola Tung as Belly Conklin, the storyline follows young love-turned-grown-up as Belly fully throws herself into a love triangle with brothers Conrad (Christopher Briney) and Jeremiah (Gavin Casalegno). To say audiences were fully seated for the final season would be the grossest understatement of all time, as until very recently, the series was still topping the platform’s global charts several months after its grand finale.

While our long summers at Cousins Beach might be over, fans are now gearing up for something a little bit shorter with the impending arrival of a feature-length continuation. Announced back in September, the cinematic tag, which is in the works at Amazon MGM, will pick up with Belly and her life abroad in Paris before following her return to the beach house alongside her forever love, Conrad. With further details being kept under wraps, fans have been hungry for any sort of information that will make their trip back to the sunshine and warmth of The Summer I Turned Pretty speedier. Luckily, while chatting with Tung about her upcoming dark comedy horror flick, Forbidden Fruits, ahead of its world premiere at SXSW, Collider’s Perri Nemiroff gathered some intel about the eagerly-awaited film.

‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ Film Is Still in Early Stages

Looking back on the massive success that found its way to The Summer I Turned Pretty thanks to its foundational novels, Tung said, “We had three books for the seasons, so there was so much material there already. So, I think a TV show was perfect for that.” Revealing that she’s “excited about the movie,” Tung admitted that things are still very much in the early stages, adding, “I still haven’t read a script or anything, so it’s cool kind of just going into it. Our showrunner and the writer, the author of the books, Jenny Han, is writing the movie, which is really amazing because she has such a great mind and is always so thoughtful when it comes to writing the scripts, so I’m very excited to see what it ends up being.”

Stay tuned to Collider for more to come about The Summer I Turned Pretty movie, and check out Tung alongside Lili ReinhartVictoria Pedretti, and Alexandra Shipp in Forbidden Fruits in cinemas on March 27.
