Alittle laughter was just what the doctor ordered when Nicole Sullivan made her way to Season 11 of Chicago Med.
Chihards can never guess what wild medical case they’ll tackle next with Gaffney’s rotating door of patients and scene-stealing guest stars. Sullivan rose to fame in the mid-1990s thanks to her side-splitting tenure as a cast member on the sketch comedy series MADtv, where she had audiences cackling for six seasons. As expected, Sullivan brought her hallmark charm and hysterics to Med’s latest, serving as a bit of a comic relief within the high-stakes Emergency Department.

Following her MADtv tenure, Sullivan became a sitcom juggernaut. She starred as Holly in the hit sitcom The King of Queens, Jill Tracy on Scrubs, Lynn Mettler on the comedy Cougar Town, and as Carol Finkle in Mindy Kaling’s Sex Lives of College Kids, to name a few of Sullivan’s iconic sitcom appearances. She kept that comedic ante coming with her role as Janine on the smash sitcom Black-ish, stealing hearts as the Johnsons’ next-door neighbor.
Famous for bringing a variety of kooky characters to life, she’s also a successful voice actor. She’s a recurring voice across many characters in Family Guy; she has also voiced characters in series like Clone High, HouseBroken, Central Park, and The Penguins of Madagascar. Aside from Sullivan being responsible for bringing the formidable villain Shego to life on Kim Possible, she has also played Supergirl across many animated projects, such as DC Super Hero Girls and Teen Titans Go!

Nicole Sullivan’s Chicago Med was a lighthearted hoot as she joined the One Chicago universe as Gail Spinner, an unorthodox patient who crossed paths with Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) and Dr. Theo Rabari (Manish Dayal) on Season 11’s “The Cost of Living.” Sullivan’s comedic energy was immediately apparent as Gail arrived at Gaffney following a ridiculous acupuncture accident. What brought the psych specialists into Gail’s room, you may wonder?
Well, the nurses soon learned that Gail prefers to make all of her major life decisions using a Magic 8 Ball. Curious about the chronic pain that led Gail to consider acupuncture, the Gaffney doctors soon discovered she was suffering from a rare condition. After learning there was no cure or immediate solution available for those with her diagnosis, Gail boldly offered the doctors $150 million dollars to lock one down. Gail won the lottery a few years back and wanted to place a mighty bet on her future.
Faced with the most unlikely of offers but pressed to consider Gail’s donation seriously, Dr. Charles explained to Gail that there was no guarantee they’d be able to find a cure in time to help her. Faced with this dilemma, Gail pulled out her handy-dandy Super 8 Ball: would she hand over the million for the greater good, or take the money and leave?
After a suspenseful shake, Chicago Med fans were left with a face-palm moment after it was revealed that the crystal ball didn’t have a massive donation in the cards for the Gaffney crew. Alas, Nicole Sullivan’s endlessly unpredictable Gail Spinner still goes down as one of Chicago Med’s most unforgettable guest appearances.
