Tragedy strikes from the screen: “Jamie Dutton” Wes Bentley embroiled in infidelity allegations, his family fractured md20

Kayce Dutton is reeling from a major loss as he returns to the screen.

In the upcoming CBS series Marshals, Luke Grimes’ Yellowstone character embarks on a new journey as he joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, and in the trailer for the spinoff series, Kayce seems to be grieving.

“The only thing I ever wanted was taken from me,” Kayce says as the trailer begins, and a nurse covers a body on his bed with a sheet, as Kayce and his son, Tate (Brecken Merrill), watch with a pained expression on their faces.

Kelsey Asbille, who played Kayce’s wife Monica, mom to Tate, in Yellowstone, hasn’t been confirmed to star in Marshals, and the trailer seems to suggest that she could meet a grim fate.

Pete Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green) then pays a visit to Kayce, in what he thinks is a “wellness check,” and offers him the chance to begin anew by joining the Marshals.

“I know you’ve got your own demons to conquer, but jumping back into the fire is gonna do you well,” Pete tells Kayce as he recruits him.

“Rough terrain, wild animals and two violent gangs” are just a few of the challenges the marshals will face, as they “bring range justice to Montana,” per the official synopsis.

The stakes rise as the squad is told that “Montana’s been infiltrated by the most violent criminal network in this hemisphere,” and they head to what’s called the “zone of death” in Wyoming on one mission.

Kayce’s loyalty seems to be questioned, too, as he settles into his new role, and his family’s history follows him. “A Dutton’s personal agenda is always in service of some form of vengeance,” Harry (Brett Cullen) says in the trailer.

“Well, the Yellowstone is gone. Same for most of my family,” Kayce hits back. “And as for vengeance, the day’s still young.”

Per the official synopsis, “Kayce and his teammates must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate and his confidantes Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) from the Broken Rock reservation.”

Grimes, 42, previously told PEOPLE that the spinoff will “find a whole new world” for the youngest of the Dutton clan, in a way that “makes sense.”

He admitted he wasn’t sure about the idea of continuing Kayce’s story after Yellowstone ended in 2024, especially considering fans last saw Kayce “back to who he really is and his soul” after selling the Dutton land to Thomas Rainwater in the finale.
