Robert Pattinson has developed a bit of a reputation for being a liar as fans have sifted through the absurd things he’s said during interviews over the years. Now, he’s coming clean to Jimmy Kimmel about the stories he’s fibbed about on his show.
The actor appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live to promote his upcoming movie The Drama. The host interrogated Pattinson about six different seemingly tall tales that he has told on the late-night program. First, did the Twilight star actually live under trash can lids beneath an archway in Venice, Calif.?
“There was an archway in my house,” Pattinson admitted. “That was what that was based on, I think.”
As for the claim that the only furniture he previously had in his home was an inflatable raft, RPatz said that was “100 percent true” and that he did this in “two separate houses.” When asked if he really had 1,000 suits, The Batman star shared that “it could be” accurate.
“I remember trying to sell them on the Real Real,” he shared. “Didn’t add up to much.”
Pattinson asserted that the last two claims were likely true, although some facts were switched around. He insists that he did purchase a car from a man on Craigslist, but Kimmel had the dates wrong. Instead of buying the vehicle after the success of Twilight, he clarified the exchange happened before. Finally, to Kimmel’s ultimate question about the claim that Pattinson had “extraordinarily heavy saliva,” the actor said, “It might be true.”
He continued, “Now I’m very very aware of it though. I think it might have got lighter. It’s got a little bit lighter as I got older.”
Kimmel said one lie was fact-checked in real time during one of their interviews together. Pattinson had previously claimed that he was a hand model in his youth, which his mother said was “not true” from her seat in the audience.
“It’s a good story though,” Pattinson laughed.
The topic of the Mickey 17 actor’s deceptive habit had come up for Kimmel after he interviewed Zendaya days before. She said he admitted to being a reformed “pathological liar.” Zendaya confessed that she never knew if Pattinson was telling the truth because he says everything with a laugh.
“The first time we kind of like hung out when we were preparing for The Drama, that was one of the first things he said to me,” the Euphoria actress recalled. “He was like, ‘Yeah, I used to be a pathological liar.’ And I was like, ‘Are you being serious or are you lying?’ I can’t tell.”
Pattinson previously admitted to lying about a wacky story he told on the Today show in 2011 while promoting Water for Elephants. He had claimed that he witnessed a clown die in a horrific car explosion during a trip to the circus as a child. None of this actually happened.
“There was absolutely no hesitation at all,” Pattinson said in 2024, reflecting on the TV clip. “I’m like, ‘What on Earth? Are you possessed?'”
