Exclusive: Donnie Wahlberg’s Emotional Calls Reveal How Boston Blue Cast Learned About Season 2 Renewal ma01

Donnie Wahlberg made sure Boston Blue’s season 2 renewal was a moment his cast would never forget.

While attending the iHeartRadio Music Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood last week, Wahlberg, 56, revealed to PEOPLE that he took it upon himself to deliver the news directly to his costars.

“I had the pleasure of calling all my castmates and telling them… that we were getting a season two,” Wahlberg said.

The moment, he shared, quickly turned emotional.

“And I did it, and every cast member got tears in their eyes, every single one of them, and so did I,” he continued. “And when I called Jenny [McCarthy] and told her about that, we shared a nice cry.”

Wahlberg, who also serves as an executive producer on the series, explained that making those calls was something he specifically requested.

“Well, I’m an EP too, so I said as one of the EPs, I’d like to be the one to tell them. And everyone agreed,” he said.

His wife, Jenny McCarthy, who stood proudly by his side on the red carpet, joked that they also marked the exciting news in their own way.

“Oh, we did. We just did a little jig,” she said, as Wahlberg added, “We might have cried a little.”

Beyond the big TV news, the couple was also soaking up the energy of the night — particularly the lineup of legendary performers being honored.

“We’re always honored, always excited,” McCarthy told PEOPLE. “Like we said, especially as we get older, it’s like, we’re still involved.”

“He’s heavily involved in music. I’m still on TV, but we love iHeart,” the Masked Singer judge continued. “We love what it represents. And knowing that Salt-N-Pepa, TLC, En Vogue, they’re going to be performing? Come on!”

“Incredible. Incredible,” Wahlberg added.
