Donnie Wahlberg Picks His Favorite “Blue Bloods” Episode — Fans Say It’s the Show’s Best Ever

Donnie Wahlberg spent 14 seasons portraying Danny Reagan in Blue Bloods, appearing in nearly 300 episodes of the long-running hit. Yet among all those stories, one episode still stands above the rest for him — the very beginning.

Wahlberg has long considered the pilot his favorite, a debut that continues to resonate even years later. Reflecting on it during an interview on the Boston Blue YouTube channel, he said:

“I see it every now and again on re-runs, and it still holds up after all of these years, you know, getting to work            with Tom [Selleck] and Bridget [Moynahan] and the cast, and it was an amazing experience,” Wahlberg                        revealed. “I just don’t know if we’ll ever be able to top it. I know we’ve come close because we’ve done some                  amazing episodes, but that one is an unexpected treat.”

For Wahlberg, that first episode captured something rare — a moment where everything clicked from the start. It didn’t just introduce the Reagan family; it established the tone, themes, and emotional core that would define Blue Bloods for over a decade, from its strong family bonds to its iconic dinner table scenes.

What makes the story even more remarkable is how close the show came to never airing at all. In an interview with Variety, Wahlberg recalled the uncertainty surrounding the project in its early days:

“I was told on Friday before the upfronts it wasn’t going to go on the air. And then by Sunday, I got a call,” Wahlberg recalled. “I was with my band [New Kids on the Block] on our cruise with 3,000 fans, and they were trying to get me [on the phone] at sea, saying, ‘You need to be in New York at the upfronts tomorrow.'”

That last-minute reversal turned out to be a defining moment. Blue Bloods went on to become one of CBS’ most consistent successes, building a loyal fanbase and a lasting legacy. Now, Wahlberg continues that journey in Boston Blue, bringing Danny Reagan into a new chapter while honoring the story that started it all.
