Parker Declares He’s Retiring In NCIS Season 23, Episode 15 Trailer

MCRT may be looking for a new leader, at least if Parker moves forward with his latest dare in a new NCIS.

It hasn’t been long since a string of unfortunate events happened in the long-running procedural. After being secretive for the most part of the year, Director Leon Vance’s attempt at managing an agency crisis failed, with NCIS ending up being shut down ahead of the 500th episode milestone. The dissolution of the organization was eventually overturned on the next outing, but it came with a massive price. NCIS’s reestablishment was only possible because of Vance’s death.

As NCIS enters the final stretch of the 2025-2026 TV cycle, the writers have their work cut out for them, considering what they have been able to achieve all year long. Long before Vance’s twist death, the show was already delivering solid weekly episodes with the occasional special appearances, most notably Ellie Bishop. Moving forward, however, NCIS will have to focus on the core MCRT, including Parker, who floats the idea of retirement.

In a new trailer for NCIS season 23, episode 15 (via TVPromos), Parker offers a dare — he’s retiring if the team is able to accomplish something. The clip makes it sound like it’s about Nick Torres cracking an important aspect of the case that they are working on, but it can easily be about something else. Watch the video below:

Considering Parker’s demeanor when he makes the remark, there’s a possibility that he’s simply joking. That said, considering how bold NCIS season 23’s storytelling has been thus far, it isn’t entirely impossible that it’s the show’s way of hinting at another round of changes for the show. It’s no secret that the last few years were difficult for the show, as it was forced to reinvent itself after the departure of Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs. Now, NCIS is near the end of that transition, but it doesn’t mean that it’s done doing jaw-dropping twists.

Timothy McGee will have to eventually leave MCRT after more than 2 decades once NCIS officially confirms its undisputed Leon Vance replacement.

For context, NCIS is already confirmed to return for season 24. So whatever they do to cap off the ongoing year will likely have some consequences for the next year. Whether that involves Parker actually stepping back from MCRT is difficult to say at this point, but writing him out risks intense backlash from viewers. Vance’s death was sad, but well-done in the grand scheme of things. Gary Cole’s exit this year, on the other hand, would be ill-timed, as he’s finally fully settled in the role that Gibbs had for so many years.

Whatever happens, one thing is clear: NCIS has finally found its mojo back. Although not nearly there during the show’s golden years, it’s great to see the series finally rolling out compelling narratives again after a period of identity crisis. This makes its future so much more exciting.
