Tracker’s Darkest Case Ever Officially Changes Justin Hartley’s Character

Justin Hartley’s CBS show pushes Colter Shaw’s moral boundaries in Tracker Season 3, as the weekly case tempts the rewardist to unlawfully kill an assailant for the first time in the show’s history. The survivalist and missing-person finder operates off the books and doubtlessly skirts countless legal limitations in his work. However, Episode 14 pushes Colter to the brink.

One of the most popular shows on CBS and network TV for three years running since its 2024 debut, Tracker has continually raised the stakes for Colter and his missing-persons operation. Tracker Season 3 continues that expansion, with Colter encountering some of the most life-threatening situations yet. Still, a missing child is what pushes Shaw to the edge.

Colter searches for Alex Clark (Kole Parks), an eight-year-old boy who is separated from his class when the fire alarm goes off during a school field trip, in Episode 14. Colter and his team first suspect that the museum’s cleaner, Sylvia Sloane (Brittany Willacy), is their kidnapper, partly because she recently lost custody of her children.

However, Alex’s situation is far worse than what Colter and tech specialist Randy (Chris Lee) imagine. Sylvia gives Shaw a tip that leads them to suspect that the teacher, Mr. Brooks (Tyler Poelle), who has shown a special interest in Alex, has kidnapped him. While George Brooks isn’t the culprit, context sadly implies that Alex has been groomed and abused.

Ultimately, Mr. Brooks is trying to help Alex, and he is nearly killed by Alex’s real abductor when he makes an impulsive move to save his student. Unfortunately, the missing child is actually in the custody of a neighbor who has been spending time with and spying on Alex, whom Alex refers to as “his special friend” in his artwork.

While Colter safely returns several missing kids to their families in some of Tracker’s highest-stakes episodes, “The Field Trip” is the first time the series implies that a missing child is being sexually abused. Therefore, it’s undoubtedly one of Colter’s darkest cases so far, and it pushes the lone-wolf survivalist into an uncharted moral gray area.

Colter’s Narrowly Avoids A New Extreme In Alex Clark’s Case

Despite Colter safely returning Alex to his parents, Sara (Elyse Levesque) and James Clark (Jon Beavers), the family’s case doesn’t have a happy ending. It’s a relief to see Alex embrace his parents, but Shaw and the audience know that Alex’s safe return is the beginning of his healing journey, which will likely be a lifelong process.

Therefore, Tracker Season 3’s storyline reveals a new side of Colter. When Shaw finds Alex and Noah Rossi (Gord Rand), Colter nearly kills the perpetrator. Though Rossi is unarmed and the situation is under control, Colter tells Alex to look away, his gun raised and ready to shoot. Shaw hesitates for a few seconds, as he seemingly considers executing Rossi.

Colter has a long history of working off the books and bending the rules. He’s looked the other way countless times, often letting unimportant suspects and criminals go. Ultimately, Colter isn’t a law enforcement officer, so his primary concern is returning missing people to their friends and families. However, Alex’s abuse pushes Colter’s vigilante justice into new territory.

Implying that Colter wants to kill Rossi, Tracker teases a dark extreme in Shaw’s personal sense of justice. While Colter has extended himself to help his kidnapping victims after their safe returns, he’s never killed unnecessarily over a case. Ultimately, Shaw lowers his weapon, kicking Rossi forcefully in the ribs instead. Still, Colter’s actions silently shifts his moral line.
