After Years of Teases, Chicago Med Introduces Dr. Charles’ Elusive Third Wife md18

Gaffney’s Dr. Charles has a rocky romantic history that resurfaced on Season 11’s latest.

Chicago Med icon Dr. Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) just took a walk down memory lane after suffering a stroke on Season 11, Episode 17’s “Altered States,” leading to not one, not two, but three uncomfortable romantic reunions.

For all of Dr. Charles’ cheer and uplifting energy, many will agree that Gaffney’s go-to psychiatrist is unlucky in love. Chihards have watched him navigate the euphoric highs and lows of dating; he struck out with his ex-girlfriend Liliana, and the stars didn’t quite align with his former therapist, Dr. Lonnie Richardson. With his ill-fated dating streak and four marriages behind him, Dr. Charles is aware that he’s no love guru, but he looks back on each of these romantic chapters with reverence, even if they didn’t work out.

Dr. Charles’ former wives returned in “Altered States,” gracing viewers with a goosebump-inducing visits during a dream that had him contemplating the romantic landscape of his life. Take a look back at Dr. Charles’ romantic history on Chicago Med, below:

Dr. Charles’ first (and fourth) wife was Caroline “CeCe” Charles

The lady with the honor of being Dr. Charles’s first and most recent wife is Caroline “Cece” Charles, played by Paula Newsome in Seasons 4 and 5. (Nadia Brown played young Cece in this week’s episode). She’s the Gaffney fan favorite’s longtime off-again-on-again lover. The couple first married when they were younger, with Dr. Charles’ mother protesting their mixed-race relationship. Her racism estranged Dr. Charles from his mother for years, but that didn’t stop him from starting a family with Cece, welcoming their daughter Robin (Mekia Cox) together.

But Dr. Charles was a divorcee by the time Chihards first met him in Season 1; Dr. Charles and Cece had already been long separated. Cece and Robin eventually moved to St. Louis, until Season 4 when Cece returned to Gaffney to seek medical treatment for her terminal cancer diagnosis. With Dr. Charles’ steadfast support, the flame was eventually rekindled, and the couple ultimately re-tied the knot in Season 4’s “With a Brave Heart.” After enjoying a beautiful honeymoon and a heartwarming romantic reconciliation, Cece tragically passed away in Season 5 of Chicago Med.

Dr. Charles’ second wife, Susan, was the source of some Med drama

Following his first marriage to Cece, Dr. Charles eventually went for take two with his second wife, Susan, played by Jill Abramovitz in Seasons 5 and 6. Her younger counterpart was portrayed by Alexis Hyatt in “Altered States.” While the couple also welcomed a daughter together, Anna (Hannah Riley), their connection eventually fizzled out. Susan and Anna moved to Milwaukee following the separation, but Susan visited Gaffney in Season 5 to confront Dr. Charles over not prioritizing Anna enough amid Cece’s terminal illness.

After learning that Susan wanted to move Anna even farther away to Arizona, Dr. Charles legally fought to maintain proximity to his daughter. Fortunately, Susan came to her senses, leaving Anna in Dr. Charles’ custody and moving to Arizona to start a new chapter on her own.

Chicago Med finally solved the mystery of Dr. Charles’ third wife

Last, but certainly not least, is perhaps one of Dr. Charles’ more humorous romantic blunders: His third wife, Lucia (Pilar Valdés), who remained unseen and unnamed for years. All that Chihards could deduce about the relationship over the years was that she was from Spain, and that it was his shortest marriage. Viewers finally got to meet Dr. Charles’ mystery woman this week.

After Dr. Charles suffered a stroke, he navigated an emotional dream sequence in which he was visited by the vision of his three wives, all wearing varying shades of disappointment. After previous pop-ins from Cece and Susan, Lucia appeared, giving Dr. Charles a message in Spanish. After reminding his third wife that Spanish was never his strong suit, Lucia told him that it appeared he’d learned nothing since their last meeting. Alas, the mystery of Dr. Charles’ foreign love affair was finally solved.
