Blue Bloods and Boston Blue have long had a presence in Jenny McCarthy’s life, even if she’s never actually been on the show.
Her husband Donnie Wahlberg has been starring as Danny Reagan for well over ten years now, first opposite Tom Selleck on Blue Bloods, which was cancelled in 2024.
Now he has reprised the character for the spin-off Boston Blue, and his co-star Sonequa Martin-Green insists the former reality star has a role in it.
Speaking with Us Weekly, Sonequa, who stars as Donnie’s police partner Lena Silver, first gave insight into her and her husband Kenric Green’s close bond with Donnie and Jenny. “I’m always texting with Jenny and Donnie’s always texting with Kenric. So we have this really interesting four part friendship going on, which is growing and it’s really sweet.”
“We talk about Jenny coming on the show all the time,” she then revealed, adding that ideally Jenny would be cast as someone that “we could see often.”
“Somebody that we have to go see. Maybe she works in the lab? And we incorporate somebody who can actually be a face for the lab for us,” she mused. “So we have to go there all the time.”
Sonequa was the first casting for the Blue Bloods spin-off, which premiered in October 2025 and also stars Mika Amonsen, Ernie Hudson, Maggie Lawson, and Marcus Scribner, among others.
Donnie has long maintained his love and pride over the Blue Bloods universe and protecting its legacy. Speaking on CBS Sunday Mornings in October, he emphasized: “I love Blue Bloods. I fought tooth and nail to keep it on the air, and here’s an opportunity to keep this character alive,” before noting: “And suddenly when I started to look at it through that lens it was like, ‘How do I not do this?'”
“If all of those millions of Blue Bloods fans don’t show up and love it, then I know we put our best foot forward,” he added.
Also addressing his commitment to keeping busy, Donnie shared: “People say to me, ‘Gosh, when do you sleep?’ You want me to complain? Everything I’ve ever wanted, I’m doing it,” and, tearing up, maintained: “I want to work harder, I want to be worthy of the gift that so many people give me, their time and their love, it’s like, how can I not work my ass off to repay them.”
Sonequa also opened up at the time about being a successor to such a beloved show. Speaking alongside Donnie in a video shared by CBS, she first recognized that the new cast is “obviously standing on the shoulders of the Reagan family, the culture that was already established.”
Still, she emphasized: “I love it, because we’re going to get close with another family, the Silvers, which is also another prominent law enforcement family and that’s where Lena Silver is from,” and noted: “It’s very similar to the Reagans. I mean they couldn’t be more different, but they are also so similar.”
