Danny Reagan has already made his mind up about Boston, but he and Baez still have things to figure out if they’re going to keep their long-distance relationship in tact.
The latest episode of CBS’ Boston Blue aired on Friday, April 17, ending on a cliffhanger regarding Danny’s romance with his former NYPD partner and now-girlfriend.
In the episode, titled “For Those Who Weren’t Heard,” Det. Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez) returns to Beantown to offer a helping hand when an NYPD case overlaps with the BPD.
She and Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) have plenty of history solving crime together over in New York, but after Danny made the decision to be closer to his son Sean (Mika Amonsen) in Boston (and more recently secured a permeant stay with the BPD), this one marks the first time they’re on the job together as a couple.

Alongside Danny’s BPD partner Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), the trio investigate a shooting and kidnapping that finds them traveling across the city to homes, salvage yards and back to the BPD headquarters to put the pieces together.
While all of this is going down, Baez has a hard time getting one-on-one time with Danny as they keep getting pulled into work duties. At one point, Baez tells Lena that things aren’t as great as they seem in her personal life.
“It just got a lot harder,” Baez says. “My mom’s come to live with me. She’s struggling. That, my daughter Elena, this job, I don’t know how Danny and I can keep doing this. We barely see each other as it is.”
Lena encourages Baez to speak her mind to Danny, adding, “I know that he loves you and he loves Elena.”

A few scenes later, after cracking the case and basically saving a man’s life, Baez finally gets a moment to express herself to Danny. While celebrating a milestone birthday for Silver family patriarch, Rev. Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson), another romance hits a milestone in the family. Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson) gets engaged to her boyfriend Seth (Mike Vogel), which causes Baez to later leave the room in tears.
“I’m sorry. It just hit me all at once,” Baez tells Danny. “Sarah was so happy and [her mom] Mae … it just made me think of my mom.”
She then breaks the news to Danny that her mother had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and she’s not quite sure how many happy days she has left with her. “She can’t be alone anymore and I’m the only one who can take her in,” Baez says. “I just can’t leave her, Danny.”
She adds, “I love you and I want a life with you. I don’t know how we can do this.”

Danny then insists he’s “coming back home” to be with her, but Baez refuses. “Your life is here now. Mine is in New York,” she says.
“There are days I can see in my mom’s eyes,” Baez tells her former partner. “She doesn’t know me. I need the last time she remembers me to be a good day. And you, Danny… Maybe we should say goodbye to each other while we still love each other. We don’t have to ever remember a bad day.”
The episode wraps with Danny giving her a hug as she says, “I love you.”
While it isn’t entirely clear what’s in store next for the colleagues-turned-lovers, those behind the Blue Bloods spinoff have teased Baez’s arc as a recurring character. In October 2025, shortly after the premiere of the series, Boston Blue‘s showrunners told TVLine that fans should get used to seeing her in the series.
“Baez will return — multiple times in the first season — and it’s a story we’re going to tell,” Brandon Margolis said. “The struggle of moving to a new place and what you leave behind is front and center, and that includes the relationship with Baez, which continues for multiple episodes this season.”
