Surprisingly, Sam and Jason weren’t meant to have a romantic relationship.
General Hospital star Steve Burton shared his thoughts on the soap’s couples. He admitted that his alter ego, Jason, wasn’t meant to be in a romantic relationship with Sam. At least, that’s not what the show intended at first.
Burton Mentions Sam and Jason’s Chemistry
During the Sunday, April 5 episode of Burton and Bradford Anderson’s That’s Awesome podcast, Anderson mentioned the “chemistry scene” between Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) and Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst). Some viewers have noticed that the soap has tested the characters’ chemistry.
Dante and Elizabeth could be headed for a blossoming romance. Burton mentioned that he’s been chemistry tested with many actresses during his time on the soap. He noted that these chemistry tests could make or break a pairing.
“But you just never know, first of all. That’s why they do these things,” Burton explained. He brought up Jason’s relationship with Sam (Kelly Monaco). They weren’t meant to be a romantic pairing.
“With Kelly Monaco, it wasn’t even supposed to be a couple,” Burton shared. “You just never know when it happens. So I guess it makes sense.”
The actor shared his approval for Elizabeth and Dante. He thinks they would make a “good” couple. Viewers have already shared their thoughts on a possible Dante/Elizabeth pairing.
Looking Back at GH’s Super Couple
Sam was previously involved with Jason’s best friend, Sonny (Maurice Benard). At the time, she was pregnant with Sonny’s baby. Jason asked her to say the baby was his to protect Sonny’s marriage to Carly (Laura Wright).
Sam and Jason’s relationship developed into a slow-burning romance. Sam ended up living with Jason during her pregnancy. Unfortunately, Sam wasn’t able to carry her baby to full-term. The loss of baby Lila brought the two closer together.
Sam and Jason went on to become one of GH’s super couples. Fans were devastated over Sam’s death in 2024. Jason reflected back on the last 20 years of their journey together. He told Sam that he would never forget about her.
Currently, Burton is on a hiatus from General Hospital. He took a break from the soap to spend more time with his wife, Michelle Lundstrom, and their family.
