High Potential Season 3 Preview: Drew Goddard Promises Bigger Drama, Moral Stakes & Answers After Cliffhanger md18

High Potential is about to compromise Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson) in ways like never before.

After a dramatic end to the second season of the hit ABC series, which saw Olson’s character finding Captain Wagner (Steve Howey) shot and bleeding to death and Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) arresting his own girlfriend (Susan Kelechi Watson), creator Drew Goddard is teasing a Season 3 full of even more drama.

During an FYC event for the series on Monday night in Los Angeles, Goddard — who appeared alongside Olson to discuss the show — said that while he could not share much about the third season, there is a central question that is gnawing at him and the other writers.

“Season 2, for Morgan, was about [the fact that] she’s lived her whole life having these abilities that cause so much chaos and pain in her life, and she finally found a place where she is appreciated for that very thing, and she was actually enjoying it. So now, she’s enjoying her job and being good at it, I think the next obvious question looking forward is: okay, but now you, the person who has been speaking truth to power, are starting to be in a more powerful position, what does that mean? How do we explore the moral implications of that and stay true to her? I think that’s going to be the interesting question that launches us into Season 3,” Goddard said during the panel.

Goddard — who also recently penned the screenplay for Project Hail Mary — said that they will continue to still provide fans with more of the procedural element they’ve fallen in love with, while also diving deeper into the stories surrounding Morgan’s ever-complicated personal-professional boundaries.

Hopefully, that includes kicking things off by updating us on the cliffhanger with Wagner, who appeared to be dying in Morgan’s arms in the final moments of Season 3. If Wagner is to die, will Morgan turn to Karadec — who is also now without a romantic partner — for comfort, as some fans are hoping?

Sadly, fans will have to wait until High Potential returns in the fall to see how things shake out for the LAPD, although there is one glimmer of hope for some Morgadec (is this the portmanteau we’ve settled on for Morgan and Karadec?) shippers. During a recent interview with PEOPLE, Olson said that it’s clear these two “have love for each other,” but that the entire team is trying to make great characters first.

“I want these characters to be well-rounded,” she said. “Yes, he’s a by-the-book cop, but he’s also a human being, so I wanted to make sure that you were able to see his heart, and you do with his relationship to Morgan. That was so important. Whether they’re going to end up romantically involved or not, you see that these people really do have love for each other.”
