Atwater’s One Chicago love story has been unexpected, but Chihards are rooting for a happily ever after.
Intelligence Unit fan favorite Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) is navigating a mighty new chapter on Season 13 of Chicago P.D.
Ever since Atwater learned he’s becoming a father in Season 13’s “On the Way,” Chihards have been perched for an update from the Intelligence Unit officer and the new apple of his eye, Officer Tasha Fox (Karen Obilom). The pair struck up an explosive chemistry during Season 13’s “Miami,” after Atwater reunited with Fox a decade after their time in the police academy, leading to a steamy hook-up with some unexpected consequences. From the moment Fox gave Atwater the news that she was expecting, Atwater has been eager for the next steps as he begins contemplating a new chapter with Fox. But the soon-to-be parents have plenty to discuss, especially considering they shared their fortuitous hook-up the night before Fox was set to move to Miami on her own new chapter.
But with a baby now on board, Fox returned to Chicago in Season 13’s “The Wicked River” to connect with Atwater over the matter. “I’m excited about it because I’m very, very fond of Tasha Fox,” Hawkins told NBC Insider while chatting about the budding connection.
Atwater and Fox are making sure their connection “is real”
While enjoying a lovely date with Atwater, Tasha dropped some news: She’d found a doctor in Miami. Catching his hesitation, Fox grew worried over the idea of moving back to Chicago after all of the recent moves she’d made; ditching her new job and house in Florida for a man she didn’t know well concerned her. Atwater reminded Fox that his family was in Chicago, but she continued to fret over her history of independence. Miami made the “most sense” to Fox. The budding couple was at a standstill, asking for the check before diving into it any further.

After their walk home led to a winding murder investigation, Fox and Atwater teamed up on a case that tested their relationship, only cementing their intense feelings for each other. Before Fox headed home to Miami, Atwater took her to a cherished swing set in a park right across the street from his childhood home.
Atwater shared fond memories of his parents pushing him on the swings as a young boy, and fondly recalled taking his younger siblings to the same swing set after becoming their guardian. The swings felt like the good times, and Atwater wanted to “force” what he saw his own parents doing. But Atwater truthfully hadn’t had a clue.
Is Atwater leaving for Miami with Fox or is she moving back to Chicago?
“I told myself if I have my own kids, I won’t force myself to be right,” Atwater confessed. “I would just do it real. I didn’t wanna pretend. You’re not wrong, Tasha. We actually don’t know each other that well. So if you ain’t trying to skip a 1000 steps ahead, I understand.”
It was Fox’s turn to open up. “I hate Miami.”
Atwater was taken aback as Fox complained about the humidity and her new units’ assignments. Plus, Fox was lonely and missed Atwater.
“Look, Kevin, I’m scared out of my mind. I’ve got to know that this is real,” Fox explained. “You and me, OK? Not just the baby. I gotta know that this is real.”
It was an idea Atwater could get behind. “OK, let’s make a deal, day by day,” he told her. “You stick around in Chicago. We get to know each other better, we take our time. Make it real. “
With Fox’s nod, Atwater broke out into a wide grin, a promising omen of the couple’s next chapter together. Watch Chicago P.D. on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC and the next day on Peacock.
