There’s a major changing of the guard happening at Chicago Fire, and it comes just as the long-running NBC drama heads into its 15th season. The series has been one of the anchors of the One Chicago machine for well over a decade, so any behind-the-scenes shake-up this big was always going to get attention. Andrea Newman has been part of the show’s DNA almost from the start, helping guide it through cast exits, crossovers, and the kind of longevity most dramas would kill for. Now, after 14 seasons, she’s stepping away.

According to Deadline and Variety, Newman is leaving Chicago Fire after serving as showrunner for the past three seasons and being involved with the series since right after the pilot. She joined as a co-executive producer, was promoted to executive producer in Season 6, became co-showrunner with series co-creator Derek Haas in 2021, and later took over as sole showrunner. In a statement, Newman said:

“Working at Chicago Fire, with the absolute best cast and crew in the business, has been the highlight of my career. Like so many others, I was inspired to get into TV writing because of Dick, so what a thrill it’s been to work with him and the amazing Wolf team of Peter Jankowski, Rebecca McGill and Anastasia Puglisi. I’m so grateful to them, Derek Haas and the NBC and Universal execs who have been so supportive of the show all along the way. After 14 years, you really do become a family and working with this group will always feel like home.”

“We’re sad to say goodbye to Andrea. She’s been at the center of the heart and soul of Chicago Fire since the beginning and the show thrived under her watch,” Jankowski said. “We’re grateful for her commitment to the development of the next generation and know the show will be in great hands with Victor taking the reins.”

Who Is Taking Over as ‘Chicago Fire’ Showrunner?

Victor Teran has now been tapped to succeed her as executive producer and showrunner for Season 15. Teran has been with Chicago Fire since Season 10 and rose through the writing ranks after previously working in indie film, including producing, writing, and directing movies like Filly Brown and Snap. Deadline notes that this is his first TV series gig, though he has been part of the show’s creative team for several seasons already, which should at least give the handoff some continuity. Wolf Entertainment boss Peter Jankowski said Newman had been “at the center of the heart and soul of Chicago Fire since the beginning” and added that the show will be “in great hands” with Teran taking over.

The cast of Chicago Fire currently includes Taylor Kinney as Kelly Severide, Miranda Rae Mayo as Stella Kidd, David Eigenberg as Christopher Herrmann, Christian Stolte as Randall “Mouch” McHolland, Joe Minoso as Joe Cruz, Hanako Greensmith as Violet Mikami, Dermot Mulroney as Chief Dom Pascal, Michael Bradway as Jack Damon, Jocelyn Hudon as Lizzie Novak, and Daniel Kyri as Darren Ritter.

NBC has already renewed all three One Chicago shows for the 2026-27 season, with Chicago Fire officially coming back for Season 15.
