Freddie Highmore got married in secret earlier this year, although he’s keeping the identity of his wife under wraps.
The actor, who rose to fame as a child star in the early noughties with parts in big films like Finding Neverland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, opposite Johnny Depp, is now more than old enough to tie the knot.
Welcome to feeling old.
The 29-year-old star made the confession during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, when the host noticed a ring on his finger and Freddie confirmed that it was a wedding ring.
‘Yes, I got married,’ he revealed. ‘It’s funny, ever since I’ve been wearing this ring people have been asking me if I’m married, so I figured, I should clarify it.’
The actor did not reveal the identity of his wife, but said that she is a fellow Brit.
The Bates Motel star also refused to get over-excited about his marriage, despite being on an American talk show, making an apparent nod to when Tom Cruise professed his love for Katie Holmes on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2005.
He joked: ‘I’m not going to jump up and down on the couch on the talk show and express my excitement that way – I know that you do that in America. But I’m as happy as a Brit can be and I’m married to a very wonderful woman now, so yes I feel very happy.’
Freddie also admitted that he wasn’t comfortable with the terminology of marriage, saying he worried ‘my wife’ sounded ‘very possessive’ and that ‘married man’ sounded ‘very old’ (we feel you, Freddie).
He continued: ‘We don’t really use that yet, but we just point to the rings and be like, “Here, look, draw your own conclusion.”’
As The Good Doctor star said he was okay being referred to as ‘my husband’ by his wife as it sounded ‘a little bit better’, but still not sure about the other way around, Jimmy teased that he should ‘loosen up a little’.
The actor then joked: ‘It’s still early days. Thank you for the tips!’
